WHAT IS TURBULENCE IN AVIATION? 🛫💺
Turbulence in aviation refers to chaotic and irregular air movements that can cause an aircraft to shake or jolt. It is a common phenomenon that pilots are trained to handle, but it can still pose risks to safety and comfort. Turbulence can be caused by several factors:
✅ Atmospheric Pressure Differences: Variations in air pressure at different altitudes can create turbulent air currents.
✅ Jet Streams: These high-altitude, fast-moving air currents can lead to turbulence, especially when an aircraft crosses them.
✅ Mountain Waves: When air flows over mountains, it can create wave patterns that cause turbulence.
✅ Thunderstorms: The intense vertical movements of air in and around thunderstorms can lead to severe turbulence.
✅ Clear-Air Turbulence (CAT): This type occurs in clear skies, often without warning, making it particularly dangerous. CAT typically happens at high altitudes near jet streams and is difficult to detect with the naked eye or radar.
📌 The Incident on SQ321
During its flight on May 21, 2024, SQ321 encountered clear-air turbulence, which is known for its sudden onset and lack of visible indicators. The pilots, following standard safety protocols, decided to divert to the nearest airport in Bangkok for an emergency landing to ensure passenger safety.
