LOOK: The DENR Soccsksargen, together with the Mines and Geosciences Bureau XII and partner LGUs, will conduct a scientific study on June 16 following the confirmed coastal uplift in Brgy. Pangyan, Glan, Sarangani.
The uplift raised the seabed by about two meters and extended the shoreline by 200 meters, exposing vast coral reefs and seagrass beds.
According to DENR Soccsksargen, SBPS Protected Area Management Office (PAMO) initially received reports on June 10 from residents of unusually low sea levels after the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck the province.
Field surveys found exposed coral reefs, seagrass beds, and marine species, many of which have begun to die off.
Phivolcs explained that the phenomenon was caused by movement along the Cotabato Trench, which uplifted parts of the coastlines of Sarangani and Davao Occidental, exposing areas that were previously underwater.
