Japan is more than just its food and historic temples—every spring, visitors flock to witness the stunning cherry blossoms, or sakura, at peak bloom. Popular viewing spots include Ueno Park, Maruyama Park, Hirosaki Castle, and the Meguro River.

The Japan Meteorological Corporation (JMC) has released its first forecast for spring 2026, predicting that cherry blossoms will start appearing as early as March 19 in Nagoya and last until May 1 in Sapporo.

Here’s the forecast for the expected flowering and full bloom dates for key cities in 2026:

•Sapporo: Flowering – April 28 Full Bloom – May 1
•Aomori: Flowering – April 19 Full Bloom – April 22
•Sendai: Flowering – April 5 Full Bloom – April 10
•Tokyo: Flowering – March 19 Full Bloom – March 26
•Kanazawa: Flowering-March 31 Full Bloom–April 6
•Nagano: Flowering-April 6 Full Bloom–April 11
•Nagoya: Flowering-March 19 Full Bloom-March 28
•Kyoto: Flowering-March 24 Full Bloom–March 31
•Osaka: Flowering-March 24 Full Bloom–March 31
•Wakayama: Flowering-March 26 Full Bloom–April 2
•Hiroshima: Flowering-March21 FullBloom–March 30
•Kochi: Flowering-March 20 Full Bloom–March 27
•Fukuoka: Flowering-March 20 Full Bloom–March 29
•Kagoshima: Flowering-March 24 Full Bloom -April 3

According to JMC, cherry blossom flowering and full bloom dates are influenced by temperature patterns from the previous autumn. Buds form in summer and go through dormancy before starting their growth and eventual flowering. During dormancy, buds remain inactive, but when growth begins, the tips gradually turn yellowish-green before blooming.

The next update on the 2026 cherry blossom forecast will be released on January 8, 2026.

Oh no 😥

Imagine arriving at the airport to catch a flight, passing the initial checks, and then realizing with horror that your passport is scribbled all over. This happened to a Chinese man in 2014, who was on vacation with his family in South Korea. The man, named Chen, discovered that his child had used his passport as a canvas to unleash his creativity, drawing a beard, darkening the eyes, and adding a series of animals and other abstract art to the official document. As a result, airport security couldn't scan Chen's passport, preventing him from boarding the flight back to his country. So, if you have young and creative kids, remember: don't leave your passport where they can easily get to it!

Faster Immigration Checks Are Coming to NAIA!

Good news for international travelers—starting December, NAIA will begin activating new Immigration eGates in Terminals 1 and 3.

Powered by Amadeus and operated by the Bureau of Immigration, these eGates form part of an automated border-control system that uses passport scanning and facial recognition to help speed up both arrivals and departures. The first set goes live this December, with full rollout early next year.

To help fast-track the rollout, the eGates were funded by NNIC and set up in coordination with the Bureau of Immigration. They will work alongside the biometric check-in, pre-security, and boarding systems already being introduced across NAIA.

With the airport now handling over 50 million passengers a year, these upgrades will help keep lines moving and make travel smoother for everyone.
