FOR PAPA, AND THE QUESTIONS I CAN NO LONGER ASK

They say time softens grief, but some memories remain tender no matter how many years have passed. Today, on Papa’s 4th death anniversary, I find myself looking back at the life he helped shape and the little moments I wish we could still share.

This month, In Between Miles, my debut creative nonfiction book and travel memoir, reached an important publication milestone. I can finally hold the printed pages of a story that took years to write.

And yet, there is one person I wish could have held a copy.

Papa.

He appears in the very first chapter, in a memory from my college years—a conversation about a passport, a birth certificate, and my rather innocent understanding of Duty Free shopping. It is one of those stories that makes me smile even as I miss him.

If Papa were still here, I would have one more question to ask him. Did he ever visit those shops at the airport? Did he remember what I told him back then?

I might even tell him that I hope he never went shopping. 🤭

It is such a small thing to wish for, but perhaps that is one of the hardest parts of losing someone: the ordinary questions that remain unanswered, the jokes we can no longer share, and the stories we can no longer ask them to tell.

He never got to hold this book. That is a sadness I will always carry.

But he is there, in its pages—not as a memory I have to explain, but as part of the life I lived and the story I finally found the words to tell.

For the miles ahead, Papa, and all that I will always carry in between.

Until our roads meet again. 🤍🤍🤍

ANOTHER MILE, ANOTHER MEANINGFUL ARRIVAL.

In Between Miles has landed in Legazpi, now held by a man whose years in the legal profession and service on the bench have been part of his life’s work.

There is something quietly meaningful about seeing a book born from personal journeys find its way into the hands of people whose own lives have taken them along very different roads.

Another copy, another reader, another mile added to the story.
