May is HYPERTENSION AWARENESS MONTH!!!

Hypertension or High Blood Pressure, is a "silent killer" that has been one of the leading causes of cardiovascular diseases and premature death worldwide for years.

Persistent elevation of blood pressure can cause damage to your organs such as the heart, brain, and kidneys which can lead to a heart attack, stroke or kidney failures.

According to the DOH, early detection and proper management are the keys in preventing serious complications such as heart disease, stroke and kidney failure.

This month let us all raise awareness and encourage every individual to a healthy lifestyle. Together, we can build a !!!

April 24-30 is World Immunization Week!

Karong tuiga, gisaulog sa World Immunization Week ang ika-50 na tuig sa Essential Program on Immunization (EPI), gipaningkamutan sa tibuok kalibutan nga masiguro na patas makuha ang mga bakuna na makaluwas sa kada bata.

The Department of Health Center for Health Development - Northern Mindanao (DOH CHD-NM) seeks to clarify regarding the Pertussis cases in Region 10.

Based on the data from the Research, Epidemiology Surveillance, and Disaster Response Unit (RESDRU) of CHD-NM, as of Morbidity Week 12 (January 1 to March 23, 2024), there were 6 reported Pertussis cases in the region. This is 100% higher compared to the same period last year with zero cases. All 6 were admitted in health care facilities for proper management and treatment, and were subsequently discharged. Two (2) of them were laboratory confirmed (33.33%), one of whom is from Cagayan de Oro City. There have been no deaths. The most affected age group are those below one (1) year old. All cases were unvaccinated.

Pertussis is a respiratory disease. It is transmitted from person to person through coughing or sneezing. There is a characteristic “whooping” or high pitched sound in between coughs, especially when inhaling. Infants may not present with cough; instead, they may turn cyanotic or bluish when coughing.

Vaccination is safe and effective against Pertussis. We urge all parents to ensure their children receive all routine immunizations at the nearest barangay health center.

The transmission of Pertussis may be prevented by good respiratory hygiene, which entails the covering of the mouth when coughing and sneezing using disposable tissues and wipes or the elbow or upper arm. Furthermore, CHD-NM is urging the public to practice proper disinfection and sanitization through washing of the hands often.

DOH CHD-NM is constantly monitoring the cases of Pertussis in the region and will provide information to the public accordingly.

Summer is the best time to have fun and travel. But, it is also the time to catch viruses like measles.

Among the symptoms of measles are high fever, cough, rashes, runny nose and red watery eyes. Some people can also experience ear infection, diarrhea, and pneumonia.

To avoid the outbreak, the Department of Health (DOH) conducts vaccination campaigns. One dose for infants aged 6-11 months and two doses for children aged 12 months and above are advised.

CDC also encouraged maintaining proper hygiene and cleanliness such as washing of hands, using sanitizer when soap is not available and covering mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
