Japan will increase travel costs for foreign tourists starting in 2026.

The fee changes are planned to begin in April 2026, which is the start of Japan’s fiscal year. The government says current fees are too low and outdated. The extra money will be used to improve airports and tourist services.

Visa fees will increase starting April 2026. The current visa fee is ¥3,000. It may become much higher. This affects travelers who need a visa to enter Japan.

The airport departure tax will also increase starting April 2026. It is now ¥1,000 and included in flight tickets. It may rise to around ¥3,300.

Tax-free shopping rules may change in November 2026. Tourists may need to pay the 10% tax when shopping and get a refund at the airport before leaving Japan.

In 2028, Japan will start a new online entry system called JESTA. Travelers from visa-free countries will need to apply and pay a small fee before entering.

These changes are not active yet. Traveling before April 2026 will be cheaper. Future travelers should expect higher costs.
