A group of dedicated locals known as the Dap-Ag Boys, from Southern Leyte, have been making waves in their fight to protect the ocean. These community heroes took the initiative to dive into the sea and remove Crown-of-Thorns starfish (COTs), a notorious marine pest that threatens coral reefs. Their efforts show how grassroots action can make a big difference in preserving marine ecosystems for future generations.
The Crown-of-Thorns starfish may look fascinating with its spiky arms, but itโs one of the most destructive creatures in tropical waters. Feeding primarily on coral polyps, a single COT can consume vast areas of reef in a short time. When populations explode, they devastate coral cover, leaving behind lifeless rubble and disrupting the balance of marine biodiversity.
By stepping up to collect and remove these starfish, the Dap-Ag Boys are helping restore balance to the reef and protect the livelihoods of communities that depend on healthy seas. Their initiative is a reminder that protecting nature often starts with ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
Letโs celebrate these ocean guardians and continue supporting local efforts to keep our reefs alive and thriving!
