UP Diliman Buzzes with Sunflowers, Graduations, and the Mensa IQ Challenge

QUEZON CITY -- The University of the Philippines Diliman was bustling today, Saturday, July 5, as graduates in sablays received their recognition and posed for photos among the sunflowers lining University Avenue.

Amid the happy graduation ceremonies happening across the campus’ many colleges, the university also hosted the Mensa IQ Challenge at the Cesar EA Virata School of Business.

Despite a period of heavy rain, 53 test takers accepted the challenge and took the supervised IQ test to assess their cognitive abilities and problem-solving skills.

The event was made possible with the support of 15 Mensa Philippines member-volunteers, who welcomed and greeted test takers and ensured smooth registration, testing, and flow of participants throughout the scheduled sessions.

After the tests, the volunteers also stayed to check the papers under the supervision of Testing Director Dr. Jessy Gutierrez and Deputy Testing Director Mel Balilio, Jr., ensuring accuracy and proper processing of results.

Note that no test takers are shown in these photos; those pictured are our members scoring the tests. We give credit also to our member Rizaldy Capulong for these photos.

Official results will be sent out to test takers soon via email and physical mail.

Those who score within the top 2% will be given the opportunity to join Mensa Philippines as new members and become part of our global community that values learning, curiosity, and intellectual growth.

We thank all test takers for their participation, and we also express our appreciation to our organizing team and volunteers for their contributions in making this event successful.

The next Mensa IQ Challenge is targeted for September at UP Los Baños. Further details will be announced soon.

Mensa Kids Bond Over Speedcubing, Chess, and Play Place Adventures

The Mensa Kids, their siblings, and parents recently spent a fun and meaningful day together at Ayala Malls One Ayala in Makati City.

A total of six Mensa kids, two siblings, and nine adults (including a Tito proxy-parent) joined the activity to bond and cheer on the Philippine Championship 2025 speedcubing competition -- an event sponsored by Mensa Philippines.

Before heading to the event, they enjoyed brunch at Fat Seed Café + Roastery, where kids gathered at one end of the table to eat and play together, while parents bonded over food and stories.

Meeting the speedcubers in person was an incredible experience for the kids -- even more exciting than watching them on YouTube. Afterwards, they were drawn to the installation of Eastwood City Chess.

The Eastwood City Chess Club is a community-based chess club led by Ms. Elinore Tenorio. She is a passionate chess advocate and certified instructor under the International Chess Federation (FIDE), the European Chess Union (ECU), and the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP).

At the tables, the kids challenged each other and got the opportunity to play against kid chess achievers, including Deandra Castronuevo, a 12-year-old who has been officially awarded the Woman National Master (WNM) title.

Impressively, Deandra achieved the required performance for this title when she was just 9 years old, but regulations required her to be at least 12 before it could be conferred.

They also played against Deandra's sister, Elle, a talented 11-year-old chess player who holds a Woman Candidate Master (WCM)-Elect status, having earned the conditional title at age 8 during an Asian chess championship.

Elle is now working towards reaching the required Elo rating to formalize her WCM title. The Elo rating is the system that measures a player’s chess skill level.

The highlight of the day was also meeting Ms. Tenorio herself, who immediately recognized the Mensa Kids’ aptitude for chess.

She linked the group to the Philippine Academy for Chess Excellence and the National Chess Federation of the Philippines so they can continue honing themselves in the game.

The group also visited Fantasy World, where the kids let their imaginations run wild exploring the play area and interactive installations. The play place visit added a playful dimension to an already brilliant day.

It was a fun and exciting experience, filled with learning, inspiration, and connection, with the promise of new opportunities and future adventures for the kids.

Moments of curious discovery like these remind us that trying new things today builds the confidence, courage, and community we need to chase our dreams tomorrow.

We Postponed Our Challenge, But Joined the March

Last June 28, 2025, UP Diliman in Quezon City came alive with color, music, and powerful messages as thousands gathered for LOV3 LABAN, this year’s Pride March and Festival.

Participants filled the academic oval with flags and banners, championing love, equality, authenticity, and freedom.

Unfazed by the rainy skies, the festival continued with inclusion, respect, and vibrant celebrations. All day there were Pride-themed merchandise, games, food stalls, performances, and showcases of diversity.

Incidentally, our Mensa IQ Challenge at UP Diliman was supposed to be held on the same day as the Pride March.

It was originally set for June 28 at the Cesar EA Virata School of Business but was moved to July 5 to avoid the heavy crowds, lack of parking, and road closures, and to keep our test takers and volunteers safe and comfortable.

This also gave some of our Mensa members the chance to attend and show their support for the event.

Events like these reflect Mensa Philippines’ belief that our brightest moments happen when we feel safe and confident to be ourselves. True inclusion is about creating these spaces, where everyone’s talents and perspectives are welcomed, valued, and freely shared.

After all, our name and logo -- the main element of which is a table -- symbolize a place where everyone sits as equals, sharing ideas and learning together.

Because of this, Mensa’s membership criteria recognize only intellectual achievement, regardless of gender, age, nationality, or background.

At the same time, we know that intelligence goes beyond IQ scores; it’s also reflected in empathy, courage, creativity, and how we apply these qualities to make a difference in the world.

As Pride Month closes on this last day of June, we greet our LGBTQ members in the Philippines and around the world with a Happy Pride.

Mensan Game Designer Martel Espiritu Launches Gamers Into a Meteor-Blasting Space Adventure

Imagine being in a spaceship with meteors hurtling towards you from all directions. EMP waves from the exploding debris have scrambled your ship’s navigational systems, but you are far from helpless. Your -- and Earth’s -- only chance of survival now lies in your onboard weapons and your quick reflexes.

That’s the tense and thrilling setting where players find themselves in Tracer X, a game created by long-time Mensa Philippines member Martel Espiritu.

Martel has been focusing on his game development craft by honing his skills in Unity, a powerful game engine used by professionals worldwide to create 2D and 3D games. While taking advanced game programming courses, he came up with the idea for Tracer X.

"It started out as practice, but the concept quickly grew bigger,” he shared on how he approached game development and prototyping to bring his vision to life.

Inspired by games like Flappy Bird that use minimal controls yet remain challenging, Martel wanted to design a game that uses just the space bar while keeping players on edge.

He also explored practical applications from top game design educators such as GMTK to deepen his understanding of development fundamentals in Unity.

In Tracer X, your ship moves left and right in a fixed pattern, and your only control is the weapon. You need to keep firing to destroy meteors while timing your shots perfectly to collect power-ups.

Developing Tracer X took over a month, but for Martel, it felt like a marathon of late nights and complex programming challenges. “The hardest part was weeding out the logical bugs. That was a huge headache,” he admitted.

Motivated by the positive feedback from those who have played Tracer X, who said they enjoyed it and found it well made, Martel is driven to keep creating and refining his craft.

Martel plans to build on this momentum by designing more games in the future, including a missile defense game, a classic shoot-em-up, and even a boxing manager simulation.

He hopes fellow gaming enthusiasts will support his work by playing Tracer X and sharing it with their networks. The game is available for purchase for only $1 at https://qrisis.itch.io/tracer-x.

READ: Tala and Her Journey to Space -- A Free Children’s Book from PhilSA

Looking for a meaningful read with your kids that will spark their curiosity about space?

The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) has released “Si Tala at ang Kanyang Lakbay Kalawakan!” -- a free children’s activity book introducing the United Nations treaties on outer space in a fun and engaging way.

Written by Patrick Mansujeto and illustrated by Ara Villena, the book follows Tala, a young Filipino astronaut, on her cosmic adventures while teaching kids about space law and diplomacy.

This book is part of PhilSA’s efforts to promote responsible spacefaring and the peaceful use of outer space among the next generation. It is written in both English and Filipino.

The English version was launched internationally during the 64th session of the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) Legal Subcommittee on May 14, 2025 in Vienna, Austria.

It was attended by delegates from 18 countries, the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), and various space agencies.

UNOOSA lauded this groundbreaking initiative to advance space education among the youth and pledged support to translate the book into all six official UN languages.
