Japan Plans to Increase Departure Fee (officially the International Tourist Tax) by 2026

Currently ¥1,000 per person
• included in air/boat tickets for all leaving travelers.

Proposed Increase (For fiscal year 2026)
• ¥3,000 for economy
• ¥5,000 for business/first class

Who Pays: All travelers departing Japan, including Japanese citizens and foreigners.

How it's Collected: Added to your airline or ferry ticket when purchased.

Reason: To manage issues like overcrowding and traffic congestion from overtourism.
