Clearing the Ground to Farm the Sun: SMC Solar Project Starts in Malita

SMC Global Light and Power Corp., a subsidiary of San Miguel Corp. led by Ramon S. Ang, has started clearing operations in Brgy. Lais and Brgy. Mana, Malita, Davao Occidental, to expand its solar power plant. Heavy equipment is now clearing old durian plantation to prepare the 506-hectare site for an โ‚ฑ11.5 billion expansion.

The project will raise the plantโ€™s capacity from 95 MW to 300 MW using 447,772 solar panels and 76 central inverters. Construction is scheduled to begin in Q3 2026, with full operations set for Q4 2028. Once completed, it will become the largest solar plant in Mindanao and SMCโ€™s second power facility in Malita, strengthening the Mindanao grid and supporting the Davao Regionโ€™s growing energy demand.
