🙌 Viva Jesus Nazareno! On January 9, we're one with our Quiapo partners and devotees of the Nazareno in celebrating the Feast Day of the Black Nazarene from the safety of our homes.

Bukas Quiapo Tours always started with a visit to one of the most beloved residents of Quiapo: Poong Nazareno (the Black Nazarene). Our route passes Hidalgo Street to Our Lady of Mount Carmel in San Sebastian Basilica.

We can't wait to show you around the community when it's safe to do so. For now, let's all have a safe and meaningful celebration at home. Happy fiesta!

Today we remember and celebrate the life of Lola Dada, who sadly passed away last week. She was one of the brightest lights in Quiapo, who welcomed us and every single Bukas Quiapo Tours guest, even during her busiest lunch hour.

We will remember her homemade halo-halo, the overflowing plates of pancit, but most of all, her kindness and warmth.

We will continue to celebrate Lola Dada and her stories in our future tours. Quiapo will miss her dearly.

** If you would like to donate any amount to Lola Dada's family at this time, you may give directly to them thru GCASH:

Have you visited San Sebastian Basilica in Quiapo? Tell us what it was like to see it in person, and we'll feature you on our main page San Sebastian Basilica Conservation and Development Foundation, Inc.

Guests of our Bukas Quiapo Tours might remember that the church is their last stop with Ms. Annabel. We also used to get a lot of students, backpackers, and other walk-in guests to see this incredible church that we are working to save.

While most businesses temporarily closed during quarantine, Junrey Jabol’s store in Barangay 385 was one of the few places that was open for Quiapenses.

Jurney, another neighbor of BQT tour guide Ms. Annabel, said that his store of vegetables and bigas (uncooked rice) is an answered prayer from the Black Nazarene of Quiapo Church.

“Hiningi ko sa Nazareno yung konting sari-sari store talaga kasi kung hindi nabigay, babalik ako sa Leyte. Bagsak na bagsak ako nun na gusto ko nang umuwi sa Leyte," he recalled of his early years in Manila.

(“I really prayed to the Black Nazarene for a small sari-sari store because if he didn’t grant it to me, I would’ve returned home to Leyte. I was so down at that time that I just wanted to go home.”)

Junrey has now been a Quiapense for last the 20 years, nearly half of his life. In gratitude for the small business that kept him here in Quiapo, he’s one of the many devotees that give out free food during the Feast of the Black Nazarene every January 9.

----

Over the next few weeks, our tour guide Ms. Annabel will be reporting on updates about the neighborhood. We can't wait to tour you around Quiapo again, but for now, stay safe and stay indoors!

If you have any questions for her about the neighborhood, you can send us a private message and we'll be sure to pass along the message!
