In pre-colonial Filipino paganism, "anito" refers to spirits, including ancestral and nature spirits (diwata), and the practice of communicating with them through rituals like "pag-anito" (or "mag-anito"), often led by a shaman or babaylan/katalonan.

Why did our ancestors believe in anitos?
Pre-colonial Filipinos were animistic. They believed that everything has a spirit, from rocks and trees to animals and humans to natural phenomena. These spirits are collectively known as anito, derived from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *qanitu and Proto-Austronesian *qaNiCu ("spirit of the dead").

History and Significance
The concept of Anito has deep historical roots in pre-colonial Philippines, where indigenous communities practiced animism and worshipped nature spirits. Anito was widely revered through rituals, offerings, and ceremonies to ensure harmony, protection, and success in their community.
