GUIMARAS BULK SUGAR
Jordan Wharf, Guimaras — Philippines
📖 STORY
The Guimaras Bulk Sugar and Molasses Plant in Jordan, Guimaras, was opened in November 1959 by the Visayan Stevedore Transportation Company, or Vistranco. A Guimaras coastal strategy describes the facility as the first and biggest sugar bulk-handling plant in Asia at the time.
The plant was established to modernize the handling and shipping of sugar for international trade. It stood on a port facility that had already been operating since the 1930s and was rehabilitated after World War II.
The installation included three bulk sugar warehouses with a combined storage capacity of 60,000 long tons. The reinforced-concrete warehouses were equipped with belt conveyors capable of approximately 300 to 500 tons per hour.
A 1961 paper published in the Proceedings of the Philippine Sugar Technologists described Guimaras as a suitable location because the terminal was in a sheltered deep-water harbor, allowing safe loading throughout the year. An existing pier, powerhouse and other facilities were also available at the site.
The facility became part of the wider sugar-export system of Western Visayas. Guimaras itself was not a major sugar-producing province, but its location made it useful as a trans-loading point for bulk sugar moving toward export markets.
The provincial government continues to identify Jordan Wharf in Barangay Rizal as one of Guimaras' major wharves. A 2024 Philippine News Agency report noted that the former bulk sugar facility beside Jordan Wharf is now private property.
The Guimaras Bulk Sugar Installation remains an important chapter in the industrial and maritime history of Jordan, Guimaras, showing how the island once helped connect the sugar-producing regions of Western Visayas with international shipping.🇵🇭🌾⚓
