Heart-touching story: "You go on — I'll wait here."

Those were the last words Maria Strydom said to her husband, Robert Gropel, on Mount Everest — just 15 minutes from the summit.

She was 34 years old. An Australian university lecturer. A passionate climber. Together, she and Robert were chasing the Seven Summits — the highest peak on every continent. On May 20, 2016, they were almost there.

But above 8,000 metres, inside Everest's "death zone," Maria's body was silently shutting down. Fluid was building in her brain. She was suffering from severe altitude sickness — and neither of them realised it.

When Robert came back from the summit, he found her hallucinating, unable to walk, speaking incoherently. He shared his oxygen with her. He spent 20 agonising hours — far beyond the safe limit — trying to get her down. He found dexamethasone in his pack and injected her. For a moment, she improved. Then she didn't.

Maria collapsed and died in her husband's arms on that frozen slope. And Robert — weakened himself, grieving — had to make the most heartbreaking decision imaginable: leave her body behind, and walk down alone.

18-year-old Bianca Adler has made history as the youngest Australian to summit Mount Everest (8,848.86m). 🏔️🇦🇺

On the morning of 20 May 2026, Bianca Jane Adler successfully reached the summit of Everest in fair weather conditions. At just 18 years old, she became the youngest Australian ever to stand on the top of the world.

This remarkable achievement follows her previous record as the youngest female to summit Manaslu at the age of 16 in 2024. She also continues a proud family mountaineering legacy — her father, Paul Adler, summited Everest in 2007, and her mother, Fionna Adler, in 2006.
