SEAFARER ARRESTED AT NAIA FOR ALLEGED BOMB JOKE
A Butuan-bound Filipino seafarer was arrested by police at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 2 on Tuesday for allegedly making a bomb joke during the boarding process.
The PNP-Aviation Security Group (AVSEGROUP) said the incident occurred while the passenger was boarding a flight when a cabin crew member asked about the contents of his bag. The passenger allegedly replied that it contained a โbomb,โ but later claimed he was only joking. The remark was immediately reported to airport authorities, prompting the implementation of standard security procedures.
The passenger was identified as a 26-year-old seafarer from Talisayan, Misamis Oriental, who was scheduled to travel to Butuan City. AVSEGROUP personnel, together with bomb disposal and K9 units, were immediately deployed to inspect the passengerโs baggage and the surrounding area. Authorities later confirmed that no explosive or hazardous materials were found.
The seafarer was taken into custody for alleged violation of Presidential Decree No. 1727, or the Anti-Bomb Joke Law. He was informed of the reason for his arrest and apprised of his rights. A complaint is being prepared while he remains under the custody of NAIA authorities for proper disposition.
โWe treat all statements involving bombs or explosives with utmost seriousness. Even jokes are not taken lightly as these may cause panic and disrupt airport operations. We urge the public to always be responsible with their words, especially inside airport premises,โ said PBGen. Dionisio B. Bartolome Jr., director of the PNP-Aviation Security Group. | via Rudy Santos
