What do you think?

Did you know that before it became known as Pasuquin, the town was once called “PA-ASOKEN”?

The name came from the local word “pa-asok,” which means to kindle fire and create smoke. As early as the 17th century, smoke signals were used on a hill called Sentinella whenever watchmen spotted invading ships approaching from the sea. Once the smoke appeared, the settlers below would gather and prepare to defend their community from incoming invaders. Because of this practice, the growing settlement became known as “PA-ASOKEN,” which eventually evolved into the name Pasuquin.

Another belief connects the town’s name to its old salt-making industry along the coastal areas. People would boil seawater to produce salt, creating thick clouds of smoke that surrounded the community. Over time, the place became associated with smoke or “paasokan,” which later transformed into Pasuquin.

Today, the name Pasuquin remains a reminder of the town’s rich history, culture, and enduring community spirit.

The Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte is set to lead a tourism, youth, trade, and investment mission to Hawai‘i and California in the United States from May 15 to 25, 2026, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening cultural, economic, and people-to-people ties with the global Ilokano community.

Building on the success of the province’s inaugural mission in 2024, this year’s delegation aims to further expand Ilocos Norte’s international partnerships while showcasing the province’s rich cultural heritage, growing tourism industry, and emerging investment opportunities through a series of engagements in the United States.

The mission will feature cultural presentations inspired by Ilocos Norte’s celebrated Tan-ok ni Ilocano festival and rich traditions, while promoting the province as a destination for tourism, trade, and international partnerships.

As part of the initiative, the Provincial Government will officially launch the “Genuine Ilocano,” program a platform designed to reconnect Ilokanos around the world with opportunities in their home province through tourism, business, and investment initiatives.

Moreover, a major highlight of the mission will be the signing of the Hawai‘i–Ilocos Norte Sisterhood Reaffirmation Agreement, strengthening cooperation between the two regions in the areas of culture, education, tourism, and economic development.

In Los Angeles, California, the province will present INabel: Living Threads—the first United States showing of the traveling heritage textile exhibition. The exhibit will feature the works of Gawad Manlilikha ng Bayan Magdalena Gamayo alongside creations by Ilocos Norte designers and artists, highlighting the enduring artistry of traditional inabel weaving.

The province will also participate in the celebration of the 80th Anniversary of US–Philippines Diplomatic Ties Dinner together with the Filipino-American community in Southern California.

Governor Cecilia Araneta-Marcos emphasized that the mission serves as a bridge reconnecting Ilokanos abroad with their roots while opening more opportunities for collaboration and growth.

The initiative also reflects the continuing commitment of the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte to strengthen global partnerships and create broader opportunities for Ilokanos both at home and abroad.
