Palawan Crowned World’s Best Island for 2025, Beating Maldives and Bali

The Philippines' emerald paradise has outshone tropical favorites like Bali and the Maldives to claim this year's top honor in global travel. U.S. News & World Report fell for Palawan's magic - where limestone cathedrals rise from turquoise waters, hidden lagoons whisper secrets, and jungles hum with rare wildlife. From the cathedral-like caverns of Puerto Princesa Underground River to Coron's sunken shipwrecks and El Nido's perfect sunsets, every corner feels like nature showing off. What truly sets Palawan apart? Its rare ability to stay breathtakingly beautiful while welcoming travelers responsibly.

When will you answer its call?

“Those who prefer to vacation at a slower pace can lounge on serene beaches overlooking limestone formations or catch a glimpse of marine life on a snorkeling tour,” a report described Palawan, which was named the top island destination for 2025. https://tinyurl.com/453hhjyu | via ONE News

PALAWAN CROWNED WORLD'S BEST ISLAND FOR 2025

Palawan has been named the World’s Best Island to Visit in 2025 by U.S. News & World Report, placing the Philippine destination at the top of a prestigious global list that celebrates natural beauty, adventure, and accessibility. The report praised Palawan’s “impressive coastlines, immersive experiences, and alluring characteristics,” spotlighting must-see destinations like Coron’s crystal-clear Kayangan Lake, the dramatic lagoons of Bacuit Bay in El Nido, and the stunning cave-kayaking experience along the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River.

Palawan is the only Southeast Asian destination to break into the top 10, surpassing other world-renowned islands such as Sardinia, Mauritius, and Santorini. The recognition reflects the island’s unique ability to attract both thrill-seeking adventurers and laid-back beach lovers.

Department of Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco expressed pride in the global recognition, stating, “This incredible honor affirms what we Filipinos have always known: that Palawan, with its pristine turquoise waters, towering limestone cliffs, majestic underground rivers, and rich biodiversity, is truly a paradise unlike any other.”

She added that Palawan’s charm — from the enchanting lagoons of El Nido and Coron to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Puerto Princesa Subterranean River — continues to capture the hearts of travelers around the world. Under the leadership of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., Frasco emphasized the DOT’s commitment to further positioning the Philippines as a tourism powerhouse in Asia through sustainable and inclusive tourism efforts.

WHY DOES PALAWAN ALWAYS SEEM TO BE SPARED FROM STRONG EARTHQUAKES?

If there’s such a thing as luck when it comes to earthquakes, Palawan might just be the country’s golden child.

While major parts of the Philippines—from Luzon to Mindanao—have been rocked by powerful quakes over the decades, Palawan has remained unusually quiet and calm on the seismic front.

According to data from the US Geological Survey (USGS) covering the years 1950 to 2022, almost every region in the country has experienced a magnitude 6.0 or higher earthquake. Everywhere… except Palawan.

We’ve had some devastating “Big Ones” in Philippine history:
• The 1967 Casiguran Earthquake that toppled the Ruby Tower in Manila and led to the creation of our national building code
• The 1976 Moro Gulf Earthquake and Tsunami—the deadliest in Philippine history, claiming over 5,000 lives
• The 1990 Luzon Earthquake that damaged Baguio and other parts of Northern Luzon
• The 2013 Bohol Earthquake that destroyed heritage structures in Bohol and Cebu

Add to that the ongoing quakes in Mindanao, and you’ll see how active the country really is. The Philippines is crisscrossed by tectonic plate boundaries, active faults, and trenches—making it one of the world’s most seismically active areas. PHIVOLCS even records an average of 20 earthquakes a day, most too weak to feel.

So, why is Palawan different?
Geologically, Palawan sits on a relatively stable block of earth, far from the country’s major fault lines and subduction zones. It’s almost like it’s just hitched to the side of the Philippine archipelago, quietly minding its own business. (Knock on wood!)

But here’s the catch: past silence is not a guarantee of future safety. Earthquakes remain unpredictable. No one—not even our best scientists—can say exactly when or where the next “Big One” will hit.

So while Palawan may have been spared in history, we shouldn’t be complacent. Take earthquake drills seriously. Know your safe spots at home. And most of all, stay prepared.

We may not be part of the Philippines’ historical “Big Ones,” but it’s always better to be ready than surprised.
