We wish we could say this was rare. It isn't. This same stretch of coastline has had whale sharks wash up again and again since 2020 — tangled in trawl nets, injured after hitting reefs, stranded until exhaustion took over.

Whale sharks are officially Endangered. Global numbers have dropped more than 50% in the last 75 years. In the Indo-Pacific — home to roughly 3 out of every 4 whale sharks left on the planet — the decline has been even steeper.

Here's what should worry us: males don't reproduce until their late 20s, females sometimes not until 50. Once a population this size is depleted, it doesn't recover in a few good years.

The threats aren't mysterious. Fishing gear they can't escape. Shipping lanes they never see coming — recent tracking found their feeding grounds overlap with cargo routes over 80% of the time.

This is solvable. Slower vessels near known habitats, real fishing gear enforcement, and treating every stranding as something to investigate, not just quietly clear away.
