---Yom Kippur: A Day of Atonement---
Today marks the beginning of Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Known as the Day of Atonement, it is a sacred time of fasting, reflection, and seeking forgiveness. In the Bible (Leviticus 16; Leviticus 23:26โ32), this was the day when Israelโs High Priest entered the Holy of Holies to intercede for the people and bring atonement for their sins. It is a powerful reminder of humanityโs need for mercy and reconciliation with God.
For us as followers of Jesus (Yeshua), this day carries deep meaning as well. The Scriptures remind us that He is our Great High Priest who offered Himself once for all as the perfect sacrifice, bringing eternal redemption and forgiveness. As it says in Hebrews 9:11โ12, โBut when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have comeโฆ He entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of His own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.โ What was foreshadowed in the ancient rituals has been fulfilled through Him.
Yom Kippur reminds us that sin is real, but so is Godโs mercy. Forgiveness is not just temporaryโit is complete through Godโs love. And every person, from every nation, is invited to approach God with confidence and humility. As 1 John 1:9 beautifully declares, โIf we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.โ
As we reflect on this day, it is also a beautiful opportunity to pray for peace, reconciliation, and healingโnot just for Israel, but for all peoples in the Middle East and beyond. Yom Kippur invites us all to pause, reflect, and seek reconciliationโwith God and with one another. May it inspire us to walk humbly, forgive freely, and pursue peace.
And we hold on to this ultimate promise: โFor He himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostilityโฆ and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which He put to death their hostility.โ โ Ephesians 2:14,16
