Hong Kong is modern, fast-paced, and highly organized. Respecting local etiquette will make your trip smoother and more enjoyable.

🚇 1. Be Mindful on Public Transport (MTR)

The MTR is the main transport system.

✔ Stand on the right side of escalators
✔ Let passengers exit before entering the train
✔ Keep your voice low
✔ No eating or drinking inside trains

⚠ Eating inside the MTR can result in a fine.

💳 2. Prepare Your Payment

Use an Octopus Card for transport and small purchases.

✔ Tap quickly when entering/exiting
✔ Don’t block the gate
✔ Have your card ready before reaching the turnstile

Hong Kong moves fast — preparation is appreciated.

✔ Cross only when the light is green
✔ Don’t jaywalk
✔ Walk quickly, especially in business districts

People are often in a hurry. Standing in the middle of sidewalks is frowned upon.

✔ Share tables if asked (common practice)
✔ Pour tea for others before yourself (traditional courtesy)
✔ Avoid sticking chopsticks upright in rice (associated with funerals)
