FREE WORKSHOP: The Sanchez Mira Tourism and Information Office organized a 𝗙𝗥𝗘𝗘 𝟮-𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝘆 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 as a culminating activity for the celebration of National Heritage Month.

On the workshop's first day, the 29th of May 2026, the lecture proper was held at the 3rd Floor Conference Room of the Sanchez Mira Town Hall.

The photo walk on the second day, 30th of May 2026, was conducted in Sitio Minanga, Barangay Namuac, where locals pleasantly cooperated with the aspiring photographers. Veteran tour guide Boyet Asuncion led the participants around the area's interesting sights.

In participants' comments, they narrated that they did not only learn more about the technical side of photography plus tips and tricks for good photos; what left a mark on them more were their learnings on ethics, respecting fellow photographers, and establishing rapport with the community of locals where they intend to photograph their sets.

Tourism Operations Officer I Carla Ocampo served as mentor. Ocampo is a multi-awarded filmmaker, and Cum Laude graduate of the University of the Philippines - College of Mass Communication.

AT THE MOMENT: Tourists explore volcanic rocks at the Sanchez Mira-Claveria boundary. The rocks are currently easily accessible via the sand deposit blocking the mouth of the river at Sitio Minanga, what locals call "punit".

The tourists are here for a photo walk in connection to the FREE 2-Day Basic Photography Workshop organized by Sanchez Mira Tourism.

With them is veteran Sitio Minanga tour guide Boyet Asuncion.

𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿'𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗲

Carla Pulido Ocampo is a respected filmmaker and community worker, best known for her work as writer, researcher, and editor for the seminal documentary 'Walang R**e sa Bontok', which won the Best Documentary award at the Gawad Urian in 2015, and as editor, writer and director of the short film 'Tokwifi' which has become one of the most critically-acclaimed short films in the Philippines after its back-to-back Best Short Film wins from the prestigious Cinemalaya, Gawad Urian, and FAMAS Awards in 2020.

Since 2022 she has been working with and among grassroots communities of her maternal hometown -- Sanchez Mira, Cagayan -- in her capacity as the Tourism Officer and Information Officer of LGU Sanchez Mira. She personally shoots most of the photographs used as publicity materials for Sanchez Mira Tourism.

Ocampo graduated Cum Laude with a degree in BA Film and Audio-Visual Communications from the University of the Philippines - Diliman.

Independence Day Climb
June 12-13, 2026 (Fri-Sat)

Expect unique plants and critters, amble on volcanic rocks at rest stops, and navigate a section or two using vines for stability. The summit of Makanakanabbang offers you a panoramic view of Sanchez Mira and the Babuyan Channel and an introduction to prehistoric plant species.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗵𝗶𝗸𝗲𝘀, which are important before we publicly open the mountain to tourists. Comments and suggestions after this climb are welcome!

TOURIST ADVISORY: Recreational water activities at the seaside of Sitio Carrillo are temporarily suspended, as per EO 38 s. 2026 released by the Office of the Mayor Abe Bagasin, due to the recent drowning incident that happened in the area last May 11, 2026.

The temporary prohibition is to ensure the completion of safety assessments and warning measures in Carrillo.

Other coastal areas of Sanchez Mira remain open to tourists but all are warned to exercise precaution for any water-related activities.

In a separate related news, the Municipal DRRMO of Ballesteros, one of the towns which is also part of the Across Sunsets Tourism Circuit together with Sanchez Mira, also reported a drowning incident last May 11, 2026.
