1. The Land of Giants
Gilgit-Baltistan has 5 of the world’s 14 peaks above 8,000 meters. This includes K2, the second highest mountain on earth at 8,611m, Nanga Parbat at 8,126m, Gasherbrum I, Gasherbrum II, and Broad Peak. It also has more than 50 peaks above 7,000m. December to March: Winter, heavy snow, limited access but beautiful for snow lovers.
4. Culture and People
Gilgit-Baltistan has many ethnic groups like Shina, Burusho, Balti, and Wakhi. Most people are Muslim, with both Shia and Sunni communities living together. People are known for hospitality. The region is very safe for tourists. Crime rates are extremely low.
5. Food
100 percent halal. Try chapshuro, dawdoo soup, mamtu dumplings, and mulberry bread. Fresh apricots, apples, cherries, and walnuts grow everywhere. Salt tea with local bread is common for breakfast.
6. How to Get There
By Air: 1 hour flight from Islamabad to Gilgit or Skardu. Flights depend on weather.
By Road: 14 to 18 hours from Islamabad via Karakoram Highway. The drive is one of the most scenic in the world.
Foreign tourists need to apply for a visa. Malaysians, Singaporeans, and many other nationalities get e-Visa in 48 hours.
7. Why It’s Special
Gilgit-Baltistan is not commercial. No big resorts or nightlife. It’s raw, peaceful, and untouched. You come here for mountains, glaciers, rivers, forts, and real connection with locals.
