Hunza Valley is the most famous valley of Pakistan's northern Gilgit Baltistan territory... for good reason!
White and pink blossoms blanket the valley come spring. The scent of ripe fruits hanging from trees drifts along summer breezes. Fall welcomes brilliant yellow and red hues all throughout the valley. (In winter? Admittedly I don't know—I'm a wuss who can't handle cold.)
I regularly recommend Hunza to travelers, but not just because of its beauty or friendly folks. Hunza is an important destination because (I believe) it's the safest and easiest destination for female travelers in Pakistan!
People in Hunza have far more experience with tourists—foreign and domestic—than any others in Pakistan. As a female traveler, solo or otherwise, you will not receive the same shock and stares you encounter in other parts of Pakistan.
Since it's been a popular destination for decades, Hunza's tourist infrastructure is (relatively) good. Hotels or guesthouses exist in almost every destination, homestays are available, and female travelers will not be bothered by overeager male staff like in the south of the country. Its famous forts have been well-restored, clean food is widely available, and information can be found online about its top destinations. Oh, and you won't be hassled by police or security forces there!
Hunza people are also some of the most educated and open-minded in the country. Hunza's literacy rate is leaps and bounds higher than the rest of the country, thanks to education's high priority for Ismaili Muslims. Many people speak a high level of English, and are happy to converse with tourists.
Though no destination is 100% safe, if you're a female traveler interested in visiting Pakistan for the first time but worried about safety, head up to Hunza! More likely than not, you're going to have the time of your life.
To the female travelers who have been to Hunza - what was your experience like? Would you go back?
