Gul-e-Gulmit

Gul-e-Gulmit Gulmit aka Gul-e-Gulmit is the headquarter of the Gojal Tehsil, in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan.

Gulmit is a centuries-old historic town, with mountains, peaks and glaciers. It is a tourist spot and has many hotels, shops and a museum.

Last night, a major section of the Bulkish Glacier collapsed, blocking the main waterway.

Today, as the ice and debris continue to melt rapidly, water levels have risen and large chunks of ice are being carried downstream. Local volunteers monitoring the area have observed multiple channels emerging through the debris, raising the possibility that a lake may have formed within the blockage. This is still an observation and has not been confirmed.

This post is not intended to create panic, but to encourage everyone to stay informed, remain vigilant, and avoid unnecessary risks near the affected area.

At present, the situation remains stable. We pray that Allah keeps everyone safe and protects our communities from any harm.

Truckloads of waste from surrounding areas are being brought into our village, dumped in the open, and burned without any segregation or proper waste management. The result? Toxic smoke, a polluted environment, and serious health risks for the people who live here.

While the Assistant Commissioner Gojal appears occupied enjoying the beauty of our valley, the residents of Gulmit are being forced to inhale poisonous fumes every day.

Let it be clear: Gulmit is not the dumping ground for anyone else’s waste. Every region should be responsible for managing the waste it produces.

The land for this site was donated by a local resident as an act of generosity and trust, with the hope that it would serve the community responsibly. Instead, that goodwill is being exploited, and a place of extraordinary natural beauty is being turned into an open landfill.

We demand immediate action:
• Stop bringing waste from other areas into Gulmit.
• End the practice of open burning.
• Implement proper waste segregation and scientific waste management.
• Protect the health of local residents and preserve the beauty of our valley.

Our silence should never be mistaken for acceptance. Gulmit deserves respect—not neglect.

A Serious Environmental Concern

This is an issue that affects all of us, and it is time for our communities to raise their voices.

Waste from villages between Passu and Attabad is being transported to Chamangul, Gulmit, where it is being burned in the open. This raises an important question: Why isn't each village managing its own waste responsibly?
This waste management project was supported by the Canadian High Commission, but the current practice of open burning has become a major environmental and public health concern. The smoke and pollution are affecting the people who live nearby, putting their health and the surrounding environment at risk.

The video clearly shows the extent of the pollution. We respectfully urge the concerned authorities, project management team and local representatives to take immediate action and implement a safe, sustainable and environmentally responsible waste management system.
Protecting our environment is a shared responsibility. Let's work together to find a solution before this problem becomes even more serious.
