Thandiani & Whispers of the British Raj

Continuing the rOaD.lEsS.tRAvELEd Signature Series, Whispers of the British Raj, this curated journey to Thandiani unfolded as a seamless blend of colonial heritage and untamed mountain beauty.

The expedition began in Islamabad, with the first stop at St. Luke’s Church in Abbottabad. Built in 1862, this stately place of worship still holds Sunday services under the jurisdiction of the Peshawar Diocese of the Church of Pakistan—a living testament to the region’s enduring colonial legacy.

From there, we ascended toward the crisp, pine-scented air of Thandiani. A persistent drizzle accompanied us through winding roads, while clouds drifted lazily over emerald slopes, veiling the landscape in a soft, ethereal mist. A short hike led us to the historic Resthouse Bungalow—once a favored getaway for British officers, now closed to the public, its locked doors and peeling verandas whispering stories of a bygone era.

On our return, we paused at another colonial gem—St. Xavier’s Church, constructed in 1850. This sturdy stone structure, rich with history, originally served as a peaceful retreat and a medical dispensary for colonial officers, offering both solace and care amid the rugged hills.

The journey was more than a tour—it was a quiet walk through time, where faith, nature, and history converged in the misty folds of the Himalayas.
