We encountered two Himalayan brown bears in Deosai National Park, surrounded by blooming wildflowers.
Initially, we took them for a mother and cub, until they started mating (!) and revealed they were actually a pair!
Spending half a day observing these two was the ultimate Deosai Plateau wildlife experience.
In Pakistan, the Himalayan brown bear is strictly protected. When Deosai National Park was established in 1993, the bear population was estimated at only around 15 individuals. Thanks to long-term conservation efforts, the 2023 census recorded 76 bears, and considering the cubs born between 2024 and 2026, the population within the park is now estimated to exceed 80.
Today, the primary threats are the waste left behind by tourists and the loss of natural habitat due to ever-increasing livestock grazing. The Deosai Plateau is home to a rare and unparalleled ecosystem found nowhere else in the world. It is our sincere hope that the government takes pride in safeguarding this precious wilderness and its extraordinary wildlife.
