Avalanche on Broad Peak - 10 Climbers Missing*
According to the Alpine Club of Pakistan, an avalanche struck a team of climbers on Broad Peak in the Karakoram range around midday Thursday. Broad Peak is 8,047m high. The entire team has been out of communication since the avalanche.
*Who was in the team:*
The expedition had 10 climbers total:
- *Nirmal "Nims" Purja* - World-renowned Nepali climber. He made history in 2019 by climbing all 14 peaks over 8,000m in just over 6 months. Featured in Netflix’s “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible”
- 5 Nepalese mountaineers led by Purja
- *Sohail Sakhi* - Pakistani climber from Hunza
- *Mallory Geis* - American climber from Texas
- 1 Omani climber
- 1 Chinese climber identified as "Mr. Wang"
- 1 other foreign climber
*Rescue operation:*
The Alpine Club said it is in constant contact with government authorities. Every effort is being made to mobilize helicopter support and rescue resources as soon as weather and operational conditions allow
It’s 8,051m / 26,414ft - the 12th highest mountain in the world. It’s considered one of the toughest mountains to climb.
