OLD GHAZNI CITY & BALAHISAR GHAZNI
Balahisar Ghazni (بالاحصار غزنی) refers to the old fortified citadel of Ghazni city in Afghanistan
The citadel stands on a hill in the center of Ghazni city, overlooking the surroundings. It is one of the most iconic historical landmarks of Ghazni Province.
Originally built in the pre-Islamic period, but later rebuilt and expanded by the Ghaznavid dynasty (10th–12th century), when Ghazni was the capital of their vast empire under Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni.
It served as the royal residence, military stronghold, and administrative center.
Through centuries, it was repaired and reused by different rulers, including the Ghurids, Timurids, and later Afghan rulers.
Large mud-brick and stone fortification with tall defensive walls, watchtowers, and gates.
Inside, there were palaces, barracks, and administrative offices.
Sadly, much of the fort has suffered damage from wars, neglect, and natural erosion.
