🌲 Kumrat Valley — Where the Journey Becomes the Destination
Hidden deep in the mountains of Upper Dir, Kumrat Valley feels like a different world — dense forests, crystal-clear rivers, alpine meadows, waterfalls and towering mountains coming together to create one of northern Pakistan’s most beautiful landscapes.
But Kumrat is more than just one destination.
It is a gateway to some of the most breathtaking and adventurous places in the region — Thal, Taki Top, Jaaz Banda, Kund Banda and Katora Lake.
🏔️ From Kumrat to Jaaz Banda
One of the highlights of the journey is Jaaz Banda, a spectacular alpine meadow sitting at around 3,100 metres above sea level.
Unlike destinations that can be reached directly by road, Jaaz Banda requires a trek through the mountains. The trail takes you through dense forests, green slopes and changing mountain landscapes before opening into the vast meadow above.
And that trek is part of the experience.
After the climb, the landscape suddenly opens into a wide green meadow surrounded by much taller mountains and snowy peaks. A stream runs through the meadow, while the weather can change from sunshine to rain within minutes.
It is the kind of place where the tiredness of the trek slowly disappears once you take in the view.
🥾 Jaaz Banda → Katora Lake
For those looking for a little more adventure, the journey doesn't end at Jaaz Banda.
Katora Lake lies further ahead, requiring another challenging trek through the high mountains.
The name Katora means bowl, referring to the lake's distinctive shape. At approximately 11,500 feet above sea level, this glacial lake is one of the most spectacular destinations in Kumrat Valley.
The route is demanding, but the reward is extraordinary — a remote alpine lake surrounded by rugged mountains and an atmosphere that feels almost untouched.
🌿 And Then There Is Kund Banda
Another beautiful stop along this route is Kund Banda, a peaceful alpine meadow surrounded by mountains.
Compared with the more famous destinations of Kumrat, Kund Banda feels quieter and more remote. Its open grassy landscape, streams and mountain surroundings make it an ideal place for those who want to experience the quieter side of the valley.
🌲 The Journey Through Kumrat
The adventure begins much earlier.
From Islamabad, the route takes you through Chakdara → Dir → Thal → Kumrat, with the landscape gradually changing from busy roads and towns into deep valleys, forests and mountain terrain.
Once inside Kumrat, the journey becomes about slowing down — following the river, walking beneath tall trees, discovering hidden viewpoints and experiencing the peaceful atmosphere of the valley.
And that's what makes Kumrat special.
You don't simply visit Kumrat. You travel through it.
