Lok Virsa Museum Islamabad
Lok Virsa Museum (Folk Heritage Museum) is located on the hills of Shakarparian in Islamabad, the capital city of Pakistan. Lok Virsa is managed by the local administration of culture and heritage - National Institute of Folk & Traditional Heritage is also located here. It is showcasing the living cultures of all regions of Pakistan including Balochistan, Sindh, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwah, Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan. It was originally established in 1982 and then finally opened for public in 1974 and became an autonomous institute in 2002. This Folk Heritage Museum is established for the sake of promotion of culture and heritage of Pakistan across the globe. It consists of vast area of several buildings as well as an outdoor museum which can accommodate up to 3000 visitors.
The museum covers an area of 60,000 sq. ft. that includes several exhibition halls, making it the largest museum in Pakistan. Lok Virsa is commonly called the "Museum of the people of Pakistan", are the real bearers of this cultural heritage.
The museum showcases Pakistan's multicultural society by displaying its history and living style of the various ethnic groups of Pakistan from all across the country. The living style of the different areas of Pakistan is exhibited here in the shape of statues, pictures, pottery, music and textile work. It showcases art works that help in preserving the living folk and traditional culture and crafts of Pakistan. It has also large display of embroidered costumes, jewelry, woodwork, metalwork, block printing, ivory and bone work. Traditional architecture facades exhibiting such skills as fresco, mirror work and marble inlay; tile, mosaic and stucco tracery are also displayed. Adjacent to the Lok Virsa Museum, there is also Heritage Reference Library that is fully equipped with ethnography, anthropology, folk music, art, history and crafts. Books on culture, heritage, audio and video-cassettes of folk and classical vocal and instrumental music are also available for sale. All in all Lok Virsa is the finest cultural museum in Pakistan. It is especvially of great worth for the tourists who have short visit plan for Pakistan and want to have more exposure within short span of time.

Entry Fee:
Rs.20 for locals and Rs.500 for foreign tourists
