The Mosque of Córdoba, also known as the Great Mosque of Córdoba or the Mezquita, has a rich and complex history that reflects the cultural and religious shifts in Spain over centuries. Here's an overview of why it was converted into a church:

Historical Context

1. Islamic Rule (711-1236):
- In 711, Muslim forces conquered the Iberian Peninsula. The Great Mosque of Córdoba was built on the site of a Visigothic church, starting in 785 under the Umayyad prince Abd al-Rahman I. It was expanded several times, becoming one of the largest and most important mosques in the Islamic world.

2. Reconquista (718-1492):
- The Reconquista was a series of campaigns by Christian states to recapture territory from Muslims. By the 13th century, the Christian forces had advanced significantly.

3. Capture of Córdoba (1236):
- In 1236, King Ferdinand III of Castile captured Córdoba. Following the capture, the mosque was consecrated as a Catholic cathedral. This was a common practice during the Reconquista, where mosques were often converted into churches to signify the return of Christian rule.

Conversion Process

- Architecture:
- Despite its conversion, much of the mosque’s original architecture was preserved. The building retained its distinctive Islamic features, such as the horseshoe arches and the hypostyle hall.

- Additions and Modifications:
- Over time, several alterations were made to adapt the mosque for Christian worship. The most significant change was the construction of a Renaissance nave and transept in the 16th century, commissioned by Bishop Alonso Manrique and designed by architect Hernán Ruiz.

- The Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba stands as a symbol of the historical confluence of Islamic and Christian cultures in Spain. It is one of the few places where you can see such a stark juxtaposition of Islamic and Christian architecture in the same building.

- Heritage Site:
- Today, the building is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for its unique architectural heritage and historical significance. It attracts visitors from around the world, who come to appreciate its beauty and complex history.
