WINTER WONDERLAND SKIING IN SWAT

Day 01: After being picked up from your place of stay drive to Taxila, which is enroute to Swat. Sir John Marshal excavated Taxila between 1913 & 1939, and this Buddhist site is known as an archeological paradise of the Buddhist period and includes the remains of three cities, Buddhist monasteries and Stupas. The History of Taxila spans over almost 1000 years (6th Century BC to 5th century AD). Visit Taxila Museum, Bhir Mound (600 BC city remains), Dharmarajika Stupa from the Ashoka perio ( 3rd Cent. BC) and Sirkap (2nd century BC remains of Bactrian Greek city) After sightseeing Taxila, proceed to Swat. The Swat valley is easily reached by road from Taxila. However it is necessary to pass through the mouth of the Peshawar valley. One has to follow the GT Road or Motor way to Mardan and then head North to Takht –i–Bahi, Dargai, Malakand Pass, Chakdara, Butkhela and Saidu Sharif. Upon arrival transfer to your hotel for overnight.

Day 02. After having breakfast begin your sightseeing tour of Swat including the Swat Museum, established in 1959 by the Wali-e-Swat. Its display was redesigned in the early 1990s by the Japanese and is one of the finest examplesof Buddhist art in the country. Beside Buddhist Art, the museum also houses an ethnological collection and some proto-historic remains. From the museum, visit famous archaeological sites of Butkara I, and Saidu Stupa. Another 4 km away one reaches Ghaligai Rock Buddhas, facing the river Swat. In the afternoon, we will visit Mingora Bazzar, which is the commercial center worth visiting as Swat is famous for its embroidered textiles, wood work and for its semi-precious stones, such as emeralds and rubies. Then continue to Murghzar where you will behold the old white palace constructed from white marble and adorned with ornate carvings. Return to your hotel for overnight.

Day 03/4: Over the next two days, proceed for day excursions of Malam Jabba, the newly rebuilt ski resort situated 45 kilometers north east of Mingora and open to the public. A Buddhist stupa and monastery is 15 minutes walk away. There are two trekking trails near Malam Jabba, one passes through Ghorband valley and the other to Shangla top. At 3000m, the views of swat valley and east to Karakorum are excellent. After a full day activity including skiing or ice-skating return to your hotel in Mingora/Saidu Sharif for overnight.

Day 05: After a relaxed breakfast check out from the hotel for your return to Islamabad. On the way make a short stop at Takht-e-Bahi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Takht means (throne) and Bahi means (water) in Persian/Urdu. The monastic complex was called Takht-e-Bahi because it was built atop oh hill and also adjacent to a stream. Visit the unique stupa and monastic site which is a short climb uphill. After visiting Takht-e-Bhai continue your drive to Islamabad.

SPECTACULAR AUTUMN LEAVES IN HUNZA

Day 1: Depart Islamabad early and drive through Haripur and Mansera to join the Karakoram Highway (KKH) at Thakot. We would visit the Ashoka rock inscriptions along the way. The KKH is a marvel of modern engineering and it is being reconstructed jointly by the FWO and our Chinese brothers. From Thakot to Khunjerab, the KKH winds over 700 kms through breath-taking mountain terrain. Shortly after Thakot we will stop to view the FWO monument before arriving at our night stop in Besham (driving time approximately 7-8 hours). Overnight at the hotel.

Day 2: Leaving Besham early this morning, we would continue on the fabled Shahrah-e-Resham towards Gilgit (driving time of approx. 7-8 hours), passing the towns of Pattan—the administrative center of Kohistan—and Chilas on the way. Spectacular scenery is our companion and we will cross the sites of two important under construction dams at Dassu and Diamar-Basha. At Chilas there are world famous petroglyphs (rock carvings) left by Buddhist Monks on their way to China. Shortly before arriving at Gilgit, we will also see the meeting point of the greatest mountain ranges on Earth, the Karakoram, the Himalaya and the Hindu Kush. Overnight at our hotel in Gilgit.

Day 3: From Gilgit, we begin a scenic drive northwards towards Hunza on the Karakorum Highway. After an hour of driving, pause at Rakaposhi view point for a cup of tea. The view of this North face of Rakaposhi allows one to view the longest un-interrupted mountain flank on earth (6000m), starting from the river bank. Continue the drive to Karimabad and check in to the hotel. In the afternoon visit the 800 year old Baltit Fort, once the stronghold of the Ayasho Dynasty, and today a wonderfully restored museum that has won many awards, including ones from UNESCO and British Airways. Explore the local tourist market, including ‘Café De Hunza’ famous for delicious walnut cake and a variety of coffees. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 4: Today will be a ‘light’ day to ‘recuperate’ from the early morning start of the previous day. We begin this morning with a few minutes’ drive that takes us to the neighbouring ‘twin’ village of Altit. Here we will visit the restored Altit Fort and the women’s work shop where they make wooden furniture and handicrafts. Enjoy the garden and heavenly orchard annexed to the restored Altit Fort and try the local Hunza cuisine at the Altit Café, cooked by a women’s community village organization. Return to the hotel for the rest of the day at leisure to take in the magnificent views of the valley and Rakaposhi. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 5: After breakfast rejoin the Karakorum Highway and drive to Gulmit, in Upper Hunza, along the banks of the newly, but tragically formed Attabad Lake, a significant addition to the natural beauty of Hunza. The road link has been recently restored by a 7.9 km long tunnel system. Gulmit is a peaceful and serene village that formerly served as winter capital of the Hunza Kingdom. Here one will walk through the village, visit a 900 year-old house, and see local women weaving carpets and making several other traditional handicrafts. After lunch at the Marco Polo Inn managed—by the former Raja’s family—drive to Passu Village. Enjoy fabulous views of Tupupdan Sar, Passu Peaks, Shispare and Boyohagur, all exceeding 7000 meters. Enjoy refreshments at the local hotel aptly named the Caravan Sarai, before returning to the Karakoram Highway and heading to Gilgit. Upon arrival transfer to the hotel.

Day 6: After breakfast we will visit Gilgit in the ‘old style’ using an open roof 4x4 Willys jeep, which for many years was the ‘workhorse’ for the region. Ride first to the Kargah Buddha rock carving, which was carved in the 7th century. There was a monastery and three stupas here as this served as a rest stop for Buddhist pilgrims travelling from China to the Buddhist monasteries located in the Swat Valley. From here we will go to the Gilgit Bazaar with its kaleidoscopically arrayed shops, and then on to the Chinar Bagh (Garden) with its memorial to those who fought for independence. Next proceed on a harrowing ride across Asia’s longest vehicular suspension bridge, 182 meters long and 2 meters wide, which leads to a tunnel before emerging along the river bank road. Continue on to the Chinese cemetery, the final resting place for the scores of Chinese workers and engineers who died during the construction of the Karakoram Highway in the 1970’s. Return to the hotel for the rest of the afternoon to enjoy the wonderful views. Overnight at the hotel

Day 7: After an early start, depart for your return journey to Islamabad via the KKH (12-16 hours depending on road condition).

ROYAL LAHORE WITH FLAG CEREMONY

Lahore is the city of saints and is studded with shrines. Lahore rose to its importance during the Ghaznavid period. It was developed and enlarged under Ayaz the favorite of Mahmud. Ayaz was the governor of Lahore for several years and lies buried there. Lahore flourished during the period of Mughal empire from 1526-1752. They gave Lahore some of its finest architectural monuments, many of which are extant today. The city is considered the “empire city”. Akbar made Lahore his capital from 1584 to 1598. The Mughal Empire had a great love for Lahore. Akbar rebuilt the Lahore fort. Jahangir had a great love for the city, his and his wife Noor Johan’s tomb is in Lahore. Shah Jahan was born in Lahore and did a lot to exaggerate his birth city. He gave Shalimar garden to the city. Aurangzeb gave Badshashi mosque to Lahore during his reign. After the Mughal majesty there was several invasions, the most destructive being the Ranjit Singh invasion. He ruled the city for fifty years and extends his kingdom to Khyber Pass and Jammu and Kashmir. During the British period (1849 -1947) the Muslims started to reclaim and rebuild the Muslim monuments destroyed by during the Sikh rule. The Supreme Court, the High Court and Government College were constructed during this time, and are some of the finest examples of colonial British architecture combined with Mughal, Gothic and Victorian styles. In 1940 the Pakistan resolution was passed at a site that later become the Pakistan Minar- a tower built to denote the passage of resolution. After the partition in 1947, Lahore became the capital of west Punjab.

Day 1: Arrive at Lahore and check in to the hotel. After fresh up, in the late afternoon drive to the old walled city for a tour in the “Rangeela Rickshaw”as well as a walk of the Royal Trail and Shahi Hamam, before ending at the restored Food Street for dinner. Return to hotel for overnight.

Day 02: Sightseeing to Lahore in the open “Red Bus” stopping at places of your interest, including Lahore Museum established in 1864-1865 by British, hosting a collection of Mughal, Sikh era and relics of Indus valley civilization and Gandharan art, and Anarkali Bazaar, the oldest surviving market in South Asia dating back to more than 200 years.Lunch at a nearby restaurant and later on in the evening we will visit Wagah border for witnessing the “Flag Lowering Ceremony”. Flag Lowering Ceremony at the Wagah border is a daily military practice that the security forces of India and Pakistan have jointly followed since 1959 every evening before sunset. The drill is characterized by elaborate and rapid dance-like maneuvers, which has been described as "colorful". It is alternatively a symbol of the two countries' rivalry, as well as brotherhood and cooperation between the two nations. The ceremony starts with a blustering parade by the soldiers from both the sides, and ends up in the perfectly coordinated lowering of the two nations' flags. It is called the beating retreat border ceremony on the international level. One infantryman stands at attention on each side of the gate. As the sun sets, the iron gates at the border are opened and the two flags are lowered simultaneously. The flags are folded and the ceremony ends with a retreat that involves a brusque handshake between soldiers from either side, followed by the closing of the gates again. The spectacle of the ceremony attracts many visitors from both sides of the border, as well as international tourists. Return to the hotel, and later proceed to Gawalmandi Food Street, a centre of traditional Lahori food. The site is surrounded by centuries-old buildings and places. Drive back to hotel for overnight.

Day 03: Today drive to the Bagh-e-Dil Kusha at Shadara on the banks of the Ravi River. The wonderful tomb of Emperor Jehangir, built by his son Emperor Shah Jehan, and the nearby tomb of Empress Nur Jehan are steeped in history and are worth the visit. Enjoy a picnic lunch here before returning to Lahore for dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 04: Day at leisure for one to explore all the wonderful sights of Lahore based on one’s interests. In the late evening, proceed to M.M. Alam road for dinner at one of the many restaurants that line and surround this area. Overnight at the hotel
