The night of Shaam Al-Ghariba. What a lonely night? What a tragic and sad night? No fire! No light! Night of darkness! The air was filled with sounds of ladies and children crying.Widows crying for their husbands. Sisters crying for their brothers. Mothers crying for their children. Little orphans crying for their fathers.Yazid’s beastly mencame to the tents. They looted all the belongings of the Holy ladies. They even snatched away the ladies' hijab. Fatimah’s daughters were left bare-headed.Shimr, the most evil of Yazid's men, came too. Sakina was crying for her father. Instead of comforting words, Shimr slapped Sakina's face and pulled off earrings from her ears. Blood poured from little Sakina's ears.Surely they would stop now. But they did not.One-by-one they set fire to the tents. The helpless ladies and children ran from one tent to another

Imam Husayn (a.s.) went back to his camp and bade farewell to his family members who gathered around him in a circle. He advised them to bear the calamity patiently. He then went to his ailing son and heir Zainul Aabidin (a.s.) who was lying unconscious. The sweat from Imam Husayn’s brow fell upon Imam Zainul Aabidin who opened his eyes then. Seeing his heavily injured father, Zainul Aabidin (a.s.) asked as to what happened to all the relatives and companions, particularly Abbas and Ali al-Akbar. Imam Husayn (a.s.) told him that they were all martyred and that he alone remained alive.Imam Husayn then bade farewell to all members of his family and those who were present in his camp. He bid adieu to each of the women and to Fidhdha, his mother’s retainer Imam Husayn (a.s.) came out of his tent, his daughter Sukayna (a.s.) caught hold of him and on being told that he was going to the battlefield, she cried out and lay on his chest, as she did everyday before going to sleep. She dozed off for a while, but suddenly got up startled and said “I will not detain you because I saw that your mother, father, and grandfather were all waiting for you and asked me not to detain you any longer.”

Ali Akbar ibn Hussain resembled the Holy Islamic Prophet Muhammad. He had a loud beautiful voice. On the morning of the day of Ashura, Ali Akbar ibn Hussain recited the Adhan e Fajr. Ali Akbar stood in front of Hussain ibn Ali. He said, "Father I request for permission to go and fight the enemies of Islam." Hussain ibn Ali looked at his son lovingly. He said, "Akbar, you have my permission. Ali Akbar ibn Hussain began to the ride towards the battlefield. He looked back and saw his father. He said, "Father, we have said good-bye. Why are you walking behind me?" Hussain ibn Ali replied, "My son, had you been a father of a son like me, you would surely have understood. Ali Akbar fought very bravely. Soldiers attacked Ali Akbar another (Haseen ibn-e-Nameer LA) slowly crept up to him and threw a spear at his chest with such ferocity that it penetrated his chest and he felt faint. As he hit the ground the spear broke but the blade remained lodged in Akbar's chest. Hussain ibn Ali began to walk towards the battlefield. Hussain ibn Ali got to where Akbar lay he took him in his arms. Akbar had his right hand on the chest. He placed his left arm over the shoulder of his father. He laid Ali Akbar ibn Hussain on the ground and sitting on his knees he put both his hands on the blade of the spear. He pulled out the blade. Angel Gabriel cried out.

Abbas ibn Ali was the son of Ali ibn Abu Talib. Abbas showed his loyalty to Hussain at the Battle of Karbala. On the 10th of Muharram, he went to the river to get water for Hussain's 4 year old daughter Sakina bint Hussain. Sakina was very attached to Abbas, who was her uncle. To her, Abbas was the only hope for getting water. Abbas could not see her thirsty and crying "Al-Atash" (the thirst). When Abbas entered the battlefield, he only had a dagger and a bag for water in his hands. Once he had made it to the river, he started filling the bag with water. Abbas's loyalty to Hussain was so great, that Abbas did not drink any water because he could not bear the thought that Sakina was thirsty. After gathering the water, Abbas rode back towards the camp. Some of the Yazid's soldiers came against Abbas on his way to river but were killed because of Abbas's skill in dangerous swordship. But one of the enemy injured Abbas by hiding in the trees. Abbas lost both his arms in the war. He could not succeed bringing water for small thirsty children and died on his way to river. on the death of Abbas, Hussain was in tears forever. The small children never asked for water after the death of Abbas and remained thirsty and silent till they were killed or enslaved by the enemies of Islam. Hussain declared him "Saqqa" (One who fetches water).

Qasim ibn Hassan was the youngest son of Imam Hassan. He was only 13 years old. Hazrat Qasim killed several famous warriors who came forward. Qasim ibn Hassan tried to go on fighting but since he was so young and very thirsty, he couldn’t carry on fighting. After a while Qasim ibn Hassan fell from his horse crying out to Hussain ibn Ali, "O uncle, Accept My Last Salaam.
The soldiers tried to stop them, when finally they came to where Qasim ibn Hassan had fallen they saw a dreadful sight. Qasim ibn Hassan's body had been trampled by the horses of the soldiers. Hussain ibn Ali took off his abaa, spread it on to the ground, and gathered the pieces from the ground as one gathers flowers from a garden and took them back to the camps.

Hazrat Ali Asghar (AS) was the youngest child of Imam Hussain. He was born only a few weeks before Imam left Madina. He was only six months old. Imam Hussain carried the child to the battle field. Hurmala(l.a) lifted his bow. He aimed an arrow at the child. The arrow flew across the hot desert. There was a hissing sound. Asghar smiled. He lifted his head and arched his neck!! No civilized mind can even imagine what happened next. The hissing sound stopped and Asghar lay still on his father’s arms. Imam Hussain looked down at Asghar’s neck, he saw the arrow, he saw the neck, he saw the smile and then he could see no more.

Aun and Muhammad were the sons of Bibi Zainab. The two boys rode out into the battlefield of Karbala. They were attacked from all sides. Soon they were over-powered and brutally killed. Imam Husayn and Hazrat Abbas carried the two young bodies to a tent and laid them on the floor. Imam walked to Bibi Zainab’s tent. He found her in sijdah praying “Ya Allah, I thank you for accepting my sacrifice. My heart is filled with pride because my two sons have given their lives for your religion.”

Habeeb Ibn Mazahir was about the same age as Imam Husayn. They were childhood friends. When Hazrat Ali moved the capital to Kufa, Habeeb also moved to Kufa. Imam Husayn wrote a letter to Habeeb Ibn Mazahir, his childhood friend, telling him how Yazid’s vultures were gathering to kill him. At Asr, when most people were in the mosque Habeeb slipped out of Kufa and joined Imam Hussain's (AS) army.

*HAZRAT E HUR A.S*
Hur was the name of one of the high-ranking commanders of the army of Omar-ibn-e-Saad who faced the grandson of the Prophet of Islam Imam Hussain ibn-e-Abi Talib(a.s.), with orders from Yazeed-ibn-Muawiah(l.a.) to either get Hussain(a.s.)'s allegiance for his corrupt Khalifat, or kill Hussain(a.s.) and all his friends. It was Hur and his army who first faced Imam Hussain(a.s.), and then kept them under siege, preventing them from getting water. On the day of Ashoura, Hur made a huge decision. Right before the battle started, he left his position and the army he was commanding, and joined Imam Hussain(a.s.), and was the first to be killed in the way of Allah(swt), by the army he used to be a commander of just a few hours earlier. The name "Hur" means free, freeborn, noble, freeman.
