At Folkways, I've been busy for the past few months with a project that has been a lifelong dream of mine. To build a place for people to come together, where they may freely exist immersed in art, music, song, dance, food, writing, and all the other personal pursuits of life. A place where people can come to connect with others or even isolate themselves from the world for a while.

I am grateful for the opportunity and plans that lie ahead, and to the people who supported me, worked with me, and cheered me on as I set out to build this place and community.

It is in sight. We're at the starting line. I'm excited and I can't wait to show it to you all.

It was such a pleasure for Folkways to design the honeymoon tour for our lovely guests, Maham & Ammad. Their journey took them along the Makran Coastal Highway for 5-days exploring the iconic beaches of Kund Malir, Ormara, and Gwadar with all the majestic sights in between.

We are overjoyed and grateful that they shared these beautiful moments with us, and we wish that their love only grows from here with many more adventures all around the world.

Our adventure began where tradition meets artistry—the workshop where Ghariyos, the traditional houseboats of Manchar Lake, are crafted with skill and care. The artisans walked us through the process of wood selection, shared the meaning behind the intricate Sindhi motifs, and revealed how these boats hold the legacy of the Mohanna community.

Organized by , we then boarded Sohni, one of the newly crafted Ghariyos, and set sail across the glimmering expanse of Manchar Lake. The stillness of the water was alive with movement—White Pelicans, Cotton Pygmy Geese, and other water birds danced around us, offering moments of awe.

As we sailed deeper into the lake, the revived houseboat village came into view—a serene cluster of floating homes, symbolizing resilience and hope. It’s a testament to the incredible efforts of the MANCHAR LAKE MOHANNAS project to safeguard this unique heritage.

And then, the feast! Freshly caught fish, fried to perfection, and a piping hot fish karahi were prepared right on the boat. The flavors, paired with the lake’s tranquility, made this meal unforgettable.

This inaugural trip was a celebration of heritage and community, made possible through the dedication of Dr. Anila Naeem, Ar. Farida Abdul Ghaffar, and the team at .dapned, in partnership with , , and .

Here’s to honoring traditions, supporting communities, and exploring the beauty of our shared history. 💙🛶

Under the moonlit skies of Tharparkar, magic unfolded... ✨

On the last night of the Tharparkar Experience, November 18th, at the Lahooti Karoonjhar Commune, we were transported to the timeless realms of Umar Marvi and Sassui Punnhun. Through the soul-stirring voice of Faqeer Zulfiqar Ali, these legendary tales came alive, weaving together the essence of Tharparkar—the enduring love for its land, its people, and its stories. 🌙

As the gentle breeze carried the notes of music and the whispers of folktales, a profound connection was felt—a connection to this enchanting desert, to its rich heritage, and to one another. It was a spiritual experience, a reminder of the beauty that lies in shared moments and ancient stories that refuse to fade with time.

We at Folkways Experiences are deeply grateful to everyone who joined us on this journey. Your presence added warmth to the stories and made the night even more unforgettable. And to Faqeer Zulfiqar Ali, thank you for gifting us this glimpse into the soul of Tharparkar.

Here’s to the magic of togetherness, the power of stories, and the heart of a land that never stops inspiring. 💛

Leaving Rehman Homestay in Gulkin, our attention is drawn to a cow tied up nearby, waiting to be milked.

As we approach, a woman greets us warmly and begins chatting almost immediately.

Before we know it, she’s jokingly swearing at the cow with humor that would cause a stir on any school playground.

We can’t help but burst into laughter. Once she’s done milking, she invites us in for tea and bread, an offer we’re quick to accept.

Inside, we gather around a stove typical in Gilgit-Baltistan homes—a two-chamber unit in the center of the kitchen, doubling as a living room.

She places more wood into the fire, filling the room with warmth as she shares stories about her life.

Her husband, like many in Hunza, works as a guide and spends much of his time traveling.

While some might find the solitude challenging, she appreciates the peace and enjoys her routines with the fields and animals.

Though she’s traveled across Pakistan, nothing compares to her home in Gulkin.

We ask about her work in the fields, curious if she manages the planting and harvesting herself. Smiling, she explains that she only handles the harvest—field workers from near Gilgit arrive on their own to plant the fields.

They know exactly when and where to come, another reminder of the resourceful community dynamics here in the mountains.

She shares her winter stores of crunchy apples and mentions the potatoes and root vegetables she has stocked, enough to last through spring.

Despite our interest in her stories, we’re also eager to explore more of the village. We thank her and head out, enriched by her hospitality.

She was the second of four families we met in Gulkin during our short two-day stay—each offering kindness, warmth, and a glimpse into the everyday life in this beautiful region.

In Pakistan hospitality is instinguishable from our culture. They are one and the same.

At Folkways, we dont have clients or guests on our tours instead we take our friends and community on experiences and show them the raw Pakistan.

Spontaneity takes time. It’s about waiting for the right moments, and sometimes, even creating the conditions for them to arise.

As counterintuitive as it sounds, you have to set the stage for spontaneity.

I love the feeling of pausing, waiting, letting moments come to me.

It’s like a cat waiting to be pet—sometimes the best interactions are the ones that happen naturally, without forcing anything.

When I travel—and I’ve traveled a lot—I’ve learned to trust that the best experiences come when I’m open to whatever unfolds.

And honestly, I have no intention of stopping; if anything, I’m keen to keep traveling with more people, more often.

One memory that sticks with me is a night in Ha Giang, Vietnam, a place famous for its motorbike loop.

I arrived early at my hostel, and the place was empty. I grabbed some food, including a few snacks I could share, then waited in the common room.

Gradually, other travelers started showing up. I broke the ice with a simple offer to share some snacks, and soon we were five people, sitting and talking, getting a feel for each other’s vibe.

By the end of the night, we’d decided to hit the road together the next morning.

When we woke up, we barely remembered each other’s names, but that didn’t matter.

We all had the same goal, the same excitement for what lay ahead.

Some were in it for a few days, others for a few weeks, but we knew we’d at least start the journey together.

It was a blend of shared purpose and that immediate sense of belonging—you find your pack, and off you go.

That energy of shared spontaneity is exactly what we bring into Folkways. We gather people with a common goal and set off on an adventure together.

It’s all about the thrill of exploring, making memories, and enjoying each other’s company in the moment.

Karachi is one of those cities where everyone seems to have a link to it.

It’s where people from all across Pakistan – and every corner within those corners – come to build a life, take chances, and make things happen.

You meet someone from Skardu, and they have an uncle who lived here in the ‘90s. Or someone from Bahawalpur whose parents spent their youth here.

Somehow, everyone and their grandmother has called Karachi home at some point, and that creates a familiar yet surprising energy.

This city runs on the hustle of its people – here, hustling isn’t just a word but a lifestyle. Karachi pushes you to keep moving, make connections, and create something from nothing.

You meet everyone from Makranis and Hazaras to Sheedis, Bohris, and Memons, as well as people from Chitral, Hunza, and Dera Ghazi Khan, all contributing to the pulse of the city.

Karachi is an adventure in flavor. There are Bun Kabab stalls run by the same family for decades, each recipe almost sacred.

Biryani here can be anything from Sindhi to Bohri to Memoni. Or you can try katakat from a street cart, seafood at a grill by the sea, or Dhamthal-style halwa puri that makes breakfast an experience.

Every dish is part of someone’s story, a bit of their history adapted to Karachi’s unique flavor, which is better than everywhere else in Pakistan (facts).

Then there’s the people. Ask anyone if you can take their photo, and they’re ready with a pose.

Karachiites have this mix of pride and playfulness, an unspoken camaraderie. They know the city isn’t perfect, but they know how to thrive here.

There’s a warmth that makes you feel part of something bigger.

Karachi doesn’t pretend to be anything it’s not. It’s gritty, resilient, and real. For all its intensity, it’s a place that keeps you curious and makes you feel like you’re part of its story, even if just for a while.

At Folkways we take that energy and turn it into experiences, sharing other people's stories and creating our own while slowly chipping away at creating our dreams.
