What is Hajj-al-Tamattu?

Hajj al-Tamattu' is the most popular type of Hajj as it offers a period of relaxation between the Umrah and Hajj rituals. The term "Tamattu" means "enjoyment" or "benefiting from a facility," referring to the ease of exiting the state of Ihram.

Hajj al-Tamattu' involves performing Umrah first during the Hajj months (Shawwal, Dhul Qa'dah, Dhul Hijjah), then exiting the state of Ihram, and finally re-entering Ihram for Hajj on the 8th of Dhul Hijjah.

Hajj al-Tamattu' is specifically for those residing outside the Miqat boundaries (i.e., not residents of Makkah or nearby areas). However, both the Umrah and Hajj must be performed in the same Hajj season and within the same year. Pilgrims are also prohibited from leaving Makkah.

What is Hajj al-Qiran?

Hajj al-Qiran (pronounced "Qiraan") translates to "combined Hajj" or "accompanied Hajj." Pilgrim makes the intention to perform both Umrah and Hajj simultaneously, remaining in the state of Ihram for the entire duration, without a break.

Hajj al-Qiran is generally for those residing outside the Miqat boundaries (i.e., not residents of Makkah or nearby areas). Both Umrah and Hajj must be performed in the same Hajj season and year.

Pilgrims must perform the animal sacrifice (Qurbani). If unable to perform it, fasting for ten days is required (three during Hajj and seven upon returning home).

What is Hajj al-Ifrad?

Hajj al-Ifrad means "isolated Hajj" or "single Hajj," and involves performing Hajj only, without combining it with an Umrah in the same Ihram or season. The pilgrim enters the state of Ihram with the sole intention of performing Hajj.

It is most suitable for the residents of Makkah. Since they already reside in Makkah, they can perform Umrah at any time of the year, so there's no need to combine it with Hajj. People living in other areas, which are still within Miqat, can perform Hajj al-Ifrad.

On the other hand, if they were to perform an Umrah, their Hajj would essentially convert to Hajj al-Qiran or Hajj al-Tamattu', depending on the timing and whether they exit Ihram. Sacrificing animals is not necessary in this Hajj.

Do you know? Hajj is of three types:

1. Hajj al-Ifrad
This type involves performing Hajj only, without combining it with Umrah. Pilgrims performing it are called Mufrid. It is the only Hajj type in which animal sacrifice is not optional.

2. Hajj al-Qiran
This type involves combining both Umrah and Hajj with a single Ihram. Umrah rituals are performed first, followed by Hajj rituals, all within the same Ihram. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ performed Hajj al-Qiran.

3. Hajj al-Tamattu
This type involves performing Umrah first during the Hajj months (Shawwal, Dhul Qa'dah, Dhul Hijjah). Then, pilgrims exit the state of Ihram and re-enter it for Hajj on the 8th of Dhul Hijjah. The break between Umrah and Hajj allows people to relax and wear regular clothes.
