Today, the Punjab University, Centre for Integrated Mountain Research (CIMR) organized a seminar on the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction under the global theme:
“Fund Resilience, Not Disasters”
The event brought together experts, scholars, and students to discuss the importance of investing in resilience to minimize the impacts of disasters and promote sustainable recovery. The distinguished speakers were Prof. Dr. Safdar Ali Shirazi former Director CIMR and former Head of the Geography Departmemt of the Punjab University, Dr. Akif Rahim, Climate Change & Adaptation Specialist, International Water Management Institute (IWMI), Lahore and a representative of the Freshwater Programs, WWF Pakistan, Lahore. Both speakers shared valuable insights on water resource management, climate adaptation, and the need for proactive disaster risk reduction policies in Pakistan. The session was attended by faculty members, researchers, and students who actively engaged in an interactive discussion, emphasizing the crucial role of science, policy, and community resilience. Prof. Dr. Safdar Ali Shirazi former Director CIMR and former Head of the Geography Departmemt of the Punjab University also shared his views about changing climates and need to adopt nature bases solutions (NbS) in Pakistan to address the issue. Prof. Dr. Saima Siddiqui, Director CIMR, thanked the guest speakers and participants for their active engagement and emphasized the role of research institutions in promoting climate resilience and disaster risk reduction. The seminar concluded with an interactive Q&A session, followed by a group photo and networking among participants.
