The Centre has been established on 25, December, 1987 to address the demands of integrated sustainable research and development of mountainous areas of Pakistan. For this purpose, major objectives of the Centre are to serve as:-

A documentation centre on integrated mountain research and development based on systematic exchange of knowledge and experiences;
Focal point for mobilization, conduct, and coordination of applied and problem-solving community- oriented integrated research;
An innovative base for training on skills applicable in integrated mountain research and development;
A consultative centre to provide expert services on integrated mountain research and development. A forum for specific attention to highlands- lowlands interaction zones and ultimately extending to Plain areas.

Today, the Punjab University, Centre for Integrated Mountain Research (CIMR) organized a seminar on the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction under the global theme:
“Fund Resilience, Not Disasters”
The event brought together experts, scholars, and students to discuss the importance of investing in resilience to minimize the impacts of disasters and promote sustainable recovery. The distinguished speakers were Prof. Dr. Safdar Ali Shirazi former Director CIMR and former Head of the Geography Departmemt of the Punjab University, Dr. Akif Rahim, Climate Change & Adaptation Specialist, International Water Management Institute (IWMI), Lahore and a representative of the Freshwater Programs, WWF Pakistan, Lahore. Both speakers shared valuable insights on water resource management, climate adaptation, and the need for proactive disaster risk reduction policies in Pakistan. The session was attended by faculty members, researchers, and students who actively engaged in an interactive discussion, emphasizing the crucial role of science, policy, and community resilience. Prof. Dr. Safdar Ali Shirazi former Director CIMR and former Head of the Geography Departmemt of the Punjab University also shared his views about changing climates and need to adopt nature bases solutions (NbS) in Pakistan to address the issue. Prof. Dr. Saima Siddiqui, Director CIMR, thanked the guest speakers and participants for their active engagement and emphasized the role of research institutions in promoting climate resilience and disaster risk reduction. The seminar concluded with an interactive Q&A session, followed by a group photo and networking among participants.

The CIMR ALUMNI wish congratulations and welcome to Prof. Dr. Saima Siddiqui as the new Director of Centre for Integrated Mountain research.
Prof. Dr. Saima Siddiqui obtained her Ph.D. degree in Earth System Sciences (ESS): Environment, Resources and Cultural Heritage from the Department of Chemical and Geological Sciences, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Italy. She has won two international awards, i.e. IAG/AIG Young Geomorphologist award in 2009, from International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG) in Australia and Giannino Bassetti Foundation award in 2012, in Italy. She was member of organizing committee of 3rd AIGeo National Conference held in September 13-18, 2009 in Modena, Italy. She organized the first ever Convocation of Department of Geography in March, 2020. Besides her teaching activities to the degree courses, she is also involved in various research activities and is a member of several National and International Scientific Associations. She is expert in physical and environmental geography, tectonic geomorphology, geomorphological and seismic hazards assessment, Disaster Management and application of GIS and Remote Sensing techniques in Earth Surface and Landform Processes. She has published more than 45 research articles in HEC recognized National and International and Impact Factor Journals. She is a hardworking, competent and honest professional. We expect that she will work hard by using her abilities, National and International experience and expertise, for the development of this department, improvement and enhancent of the quality of education and welfare of the students of this department.
