Straddling the Arizona-Utah border, Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park spans 91,696 acres within the Navajo Nation. It’s not a national park, but a sacred landscape managed by the Diné. The valley floor sits at 5,200 feet, with sandstone buttes rising 400–1,000 feet above the desert.

The Mittens, Merrick Butte, and Totem Pole are erosional remnants of a 300-million-year-old seabed. Uplift, wind, and water carved De Chelly Sandstone into formations that defined the American West in film. John Ford shot seven westerns here, making it Hollywood’s frontier.

The 17-mile Valley Drive is a dirt loop accessible with a permit. Guided tours reach restricted areas like Mystery Valley and Hunts Mesa. Sunrise and sunset transform the red rock to deep crimson. The Navajo name Tsé Biiʼ Ndzisgaii means “valley of the rocks.”

Monument Valley shows how land can hold both geology and memory.
