Polling is underway across Gilgit-Baltistan for the Legislative Assembly elections, with voting set to continue uninterrupted until 5:00 PM. Voters began arriving at polling stations early in the morning, reflecting strong public enthusiasm for the electoral process.

According to the Election Commission, 1,391 polling stations have been established across all districts of Gilgit-Baltistan, including 349 sensitive and 551 highly sensitive stations. More than 400 candidates are contesting for 24 assembly seats, while 958,480 registered voters are eligible to cast their ballots.

Major political parties in the race include PPP (23 candidates), PML-N (22), IPP (15), PML (11), JUI-F (9), MWM (7), and Jamaat-e-Islami and MQM with 6 candidates each. Additionally, 266 independent candidates are contesting from various constituencies.

Strict security measures have been put in place to ensure peaceful elections, with personnel from the local police, GB Scouts, and Punjab Police deployed across the region. Law enforcement agencies have also conducted flag marches in key constituencies.

Several constituencies are expected to witness closely contested races, including GBA-1 Gilgit, GBA-2 Gilgit, GBA-18 Diamer, GBA-19 Ghizer, and GBA-13 Astore, where candidates from major political parties and independents are competing for crucial seats.

His Highness Prince Rahim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan 5, arrived today in Islamabad on an official seven-day visit to Pakistan, at the invitation of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

Upon his arrival, His Highness was received by the President of Pakistan, His Excellency Asif Ali Zardari and his daughter First Lady Aseefa Bhutto Zardari. Also present were Attaullah Tarar, Federal Minister for Information; Saleem Mandviwalla, Member of the Senate; Sultan Ali Allana, Director of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development; and the senior leadership of the Ismaili Community in Pakistan.

The President and His Highness travelled together to Aiwan-e-Sadr (President House) where a guard of honour was presented. Following a bilateral meeting, President Zardari hosted a banquet in honour of His Highness’s visit this evening.

Guests at the banquet included Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Field Marshal and Chief of Defence Forces Syed Asim Munir, Chairman of the Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani, Speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, and Chief Minister of Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah. Also in attendance were federal ministers, members of parliament and members of the diplomatic community.

This is the Aga Khan's first visit to Pakistan since assuming leadership of the Ismaili Muslim community as the 50th Imam, following the passing of his father, His Late Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan IV in February 2025.

During his visit, His Highness will meet with Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and other government officials and will meet with members of the Ismaili community in Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral.
