🔴 BREAKING: Body of Pakistani climber Sohail Sakhi found on Broad Peak
The body of Pakistani mountaineer Sohail Sakhi has been found on Broad Peak, 15 days after he went missing following an avalanche, according to sources at the mountain's base camp.
Porters travelling toward Broad Peak discovered the body and brought it back to base camp, the sources said. Sakhi was from Hunza, Gilgit-Baltistan and had been climbing with Nirmal “Nims” Purja's expedition team.
His body is expected to be transported by helicopter from base camp to Skardu, although the timing and arrangements could change depending on weather and operational conditions.
Sakhi was among the climbers caught in the avalanche that struck Broad Peak. Seven climbers, including five Nepali mountaineers, had already been reported dead in the disaster.
His recovery brings an end to a 15-day search and gives his family and fellow climbers a chance to bring him home.
Broad Peak, one of Pakistan's highest mountains, has again shown the risks faced by climbers and high-altitude workers in the Karakoram, where weather and mountain conditions can change rapidly.
For the families waiting at home, how important is it for Pakistan to strengthen high-altitude rescue and recovery systems on its major peaks?
