Cukrowariw — today an almost forgotten place in central Ukraine, once bustled with life as one of the most important industrial settlements in the region. It was established in Soviet times around a huge sugar factory, which was one of the largest in the entire USSR. The plant provided jobs for thousands of people, and a real, self-sufficient town grew up around it — with apartment blocks, a school, a nursery, a club, shops and all the necessary infrastructure. At its peak, up to three thousand people lived here.
However, with time, after the collapse of the Soviet Union and economic changes, the sugar factory ceased to be profitable. The plant was closed, and the residents began to gradually leave Cukrowariw in search of work and a better life. Today, the place looks like a ghost town — many blocks of flats stand empty, with broken windows and overgrown streets. Only a handful of people have remained, trying to live where everything once bustled with energy.
Cukrowariw is one of the many symbols of the changes that Ukraine has undergone — a place that was supposed to be the future, but today reminds us how fragile even the greatest industrial visions can be. Abandoned, but still alive in the memories of those who once called it home.

The war in Ukraine is one of the most dangerous environments for journalists since World War II. From the start of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022 to mid 2025, at least 18 journalists were killed while performing their duties, and more than 125 media professionals lost their lives — including reporters, editorial staff and those who joined the Ukrainian Armed Forces after the outbreak of the war.
Organisations such as Reporters Without Borders (RSF), the Institute of Mass Information (IMI) and the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) are documenting these losses with growing concern. According to RSF data, there were nearly 150 cases of attacks, detentions, kidnappings, injuries and killings of journalists during the first three years of the war. IMI recorded 599 crimes against media representatives and information infrastructure during the same period — from shelling and cyberattacks to physical assaults and destruction of equipment.
Among those killed were Ukrainian reporters, such as Maks Levin, a photojournalist who died near Kyiv in 2022, as well as foreign journalists, including Brent Renaud (USA) and Pierre Zakrzewski (France/Ireland), who were killed in Irpin and Horence. The death of Viktoria Roshchyna, a Ukrainian journalist who died in Russian captivity in 2024, caused particular outrage. She was the ninth woman to die while reporting on this war.
Today, journalism in Ukraine is not just a profession – it is an act of courage and resistance against disinformation, censorship and violence. Reporters document war crimes, tell the stories of civilians and soldiers, and reveal the brutal reality behind the scenes, often at the expense of their own safety. Every report from the war zone is a testimony to the truth that can cost lives.

On 24 August 1991, Ukraine officially declared its independence. On that day, the Supreme Council of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic adopted the Declaration of Independence, rejecting the authority of the Soviet Union and establishing a sovereign Ukrainian state. This decision was a response to the attempted coup in Moscow and growing patriotic sentiments in Ukraine. In December 1991, a referendum was held in which over 90% of citizens supported Ukraine's independence. This day is now celebrated as Ukraine's Independence Day.

On 24 August 2022, Ukraine celebrated Independence Day in wartime conditions, exactly six months since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion. Due to the threat of missile attacks, all mass public events were canceled. Instead of a military parade in the center of Kyiv, was an exhibition of destroyed Russian equipment — tanks, transporters, and self-propelled guns. The celebrations were mainly symbolic and took place in an intimate atmosphere. President Volodymyr Zelensky gave a speech in which he spoke of Ukraine's determination to continue fighting for independence. On the same day, the United States announced its largest military aid package to Ukraine to date, worth approximately $3 billion. Solidarity marches with Ukraine were organised in many European cities. Despite the ongoing war and constant threat, the Ukrainian state maintained its sovereignty and continued to function as an independent country.

Since February 2022, over 500 000 children have been born in Ukraine.
Many of them were born in basements, shelters or hospitals under fire.
Often without access to electricity, heating, running water or medical care.
Thousands of children have been orphaned – their fathers killed on the front lines. Hundreds of newborns have died due to malnutrition, lack of incubators or cold.
According to UNICEF, over 7.5 million children in Ukraine were at risk from the consequences of war – physically, mentally or educationally.
Thousands were forcibly deported to Russia.
This is everyday life in a war that has been going on for over 3.5 years.

Although many people do not associate wine with Ukraine, this country boasts one of the oldest wine-making traditions in Europe. Vine cultivation here dates back to ancient times – the Greeks and Romans established vineyards on the Black Sea coast. In the Middle Ages, monasteries developed them, and in the 19th century, Ukraine was an important centre for the production of sparkling and dessert wines.
Today, Ukrainian producers combine traditional methods with a modern approach to create unique wines that win awards at international competitions. Winemakers are increasingly experimenting with natural fermentation methods, reducing chemicals in vineyards and cultivating native grape varieties.
The most important wine regions of Ukraine are:
Transcarpathia – at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains, with Hungarian and Slovak influences,
Odessa Oblast – especially the areas around Bilohorod-Dnistrovskyi and Shabo,
Kherson and Mykolaiv Oblasts – with a favourable steppe climate.
Crimea – traditionally a strong wine region, although today its status is politically complex.
Despite difficult conditions – including war and the loss of some territories – Ukrainian winemakers continue to invest, export and promote their wines as part of the national identity and culture of the region.

Oleshky Piaski, is one of the largest sandy areas in Europe, located in southern Ukraine, along the Dnieper River, in the Kherson Oblast. Although the landscapes of this region resemble a classic desert, it is in fact a steppe area with unique natural and historical values.
The vast sands, in places forming dunes up to 20 metres high, were created as a result of human activity, including intensive grazing and vegetation clearing in the 19th century. Today, this area delights with its unique flora and fauna – rare species of steppe plants, insects, reptiles and birds can be found here.
Unfortunately, today Oleshki Piaski is one of the areas affected by the effects of war, including the destruction of the Zaporizhzhia Hydroelectric Power Plant dam, which had a catastrophic impact on the local environment.
Despite the difficult conditions, Oleshky Piaski remains one of the most extraordinary and underrated places in Ukraine – a wild, beautiful and history-filled landscape that deserves protection and attention.

The flag of Ukraine consists of two horizontal stripes: blue at the top and yellow at the bottom. The blue colour symbolises the boundless sky, while the yellow symbolises the richness of the wheat fields and Ukrainian soil. Together, they form a symbol of peace and prosperity, reflecting the history and identity of the Ukrainian people.
These colours have also become a symbol of the courage and steadfastness of the Ukrainian people, especially in the context of ongoing war.
The flag was banned during the Soviet era, but after independence was regained in 1991, it returned as a symbol of sovereignty.

The Arsenalna metro station in Kyiv was opened on 6 November 1960 as one of the first stations in the Kyiv metro system. From the very beginning, it stood out for something unique – its depth. Until 2022, it was the deepest metro station in the world, reaching 105.5 metres below ground.
For passengers, the daily journey on this route is a real underground challenge. The descent to the platform takes up to 5 minutes, as you have to go down two very long escalators, with a change halfway down. This unusual experience is more like going down into a mine than entering urban transport.
Such a great depth is not accidental. Kiev lies on the steep banks of the Dnieper River, and the differences in height in the city centre are significant.
For tourists, it is one of the city's most interesting attractions.

The Ukrainian hryvnia has been twice honoured as the most beautiful currency in the world in 2008 and 2013 by the International Bank Note Society (IBNS).
In 2008, the award went to the 50 hryvnia banknote, which features a portrait of Mykhailo Hrushevsky, an outstanding Ukrainian historian and politician.
In 2013, the 200 hryvnia banknote was awarded, featuring the image of Lesia Ukrainka, one of the most important poets in Ukrainian literature.
Ukrainian banknotes have been praised for their esthetics, modern security features, colours and national symbolism. The Ukrainian hryvnia really stands out from other currencies with its rich graphics and attention to detail.

Railway infrastructure in one of Kyiv's districts was also damaged. During the attack, one of the Russian missiles fell directly on two apartment blocks in the Sviatoshyn district of Kiev. The blocks were completely destroyed , causing it to partially collapse. The shock wave also shattered windows in the children's ward of one of the capital's hospitals. On Thursday morning 31 July, it was reported that at least eight people had been killed, including a six-year-old boy and another child, and 52 had been injured, including nine children.
