Thirty-two years ago in Poland, the democratic opposition defeated the communist regime. On 4 June 1989, the first partially free parliamentary elections after World War II were held. The success was spectacular - Solidarity won 99 seats in the senate, independents won one, and communists none. The symbol of the end of communism in Europe is the fall of the Berlin Wall, but just a few months earlier Poland had a democratic government led by Tadeusz Mazowiecki. I will tell you more about it when you visit the permanent exhibition at the European Solidarity Centre in Gdansk.

Although tha largest brick church in the world is St. Mar'ys Basilica in Gdańsk, our cathedral is located in Oliva. This is a church with over 800 years of history. It served the Cistercian monks for many centuries. In 1925 the Pope Pius XI erected the diocese of Gdansk and since then we have the cathedral here. It is the longest church in Poland.

The symbol of Gdansk is the Crane-Gate. It was the largest crane in medieval Europe. Built in 1444, it served the port for 500 years. The upper part could raise two tons to a height of 27 m and the lower part even four tons to a height of 11 m. The Crane was used for the reloading of goods, but also for placing masts on ships built in Gdansk. The two towers were also a strong element of the city's defence system. The Crane is currently a branch of National Maritime Museum.

Blessed Virgin Mary Basilica in Gdansk is the largest church in the world built of brick. It can hold up to 25 000 people. It was erected between 1343 and 1502. So the construction took 159 years. It is the largest church in Gdansk, but not a cathedral. The cathedral is located in Oliwa, in the former church of Cistercian Order.
