Did you know? The Jawischowitz sub-camp, located in the village of Jawiszowice, was one of the largest sub-camps of Auschwitz in terms of the number of prisoners. Established in mid-August 1942, it initially housed 150 French Jewish prisoners who worked in the Brzeszcze coal mine. This was the first time prisoners were employed underground in the history of German concentration camps.

By June 1944, the sub-camp held around 2,500 prisoners, including Jews from Poland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, and Hungary, as well as Poles, Russians, and Germans. The camp was surrounded by electrified barbed wire and consisted of over ten barracks, most of which were wooden. Conditions were harsh, with overcrowding and long shifts in the coal mines. Prisoners worked exhausting hours in three shifts, loading coal, making repairs, and performing construction tasks. The grueling work and lack of sufficient food took a heavy toll on their physical and mental well-being. SS doctors held selection every few weeks, after which the prisoners classified as unfit for labor were taken to Auschwitz. Most of them were murdered in the gas chambers there.
