🧂 10 Facts About the Wieliczka Salt Mine
1️⃣ One of the oldest continuously operating salt mines in the world. Mining ran from the Middle Ages until salt extraction fully stopped on June 30, 1996.
2️⃣ The Chapel of St. Kinga holds a statue of Pope John Paul II carved entirely from salt. Miners made it in 1999 to thank him for canonizing St. Kinga, patron saint of salt miners. That’s the only salt statue of a pope in the world.
3️⃣ During WWII, the Germans ran an underground branch of the Heinkel aircraft-parts factory in the mine. From April 1944, a forced labor camp for Jews (a subcamp of Płaszów) held several thousand prisoners working there under brutal conditions.
4️⃣ The 36-meter-tall Stanisław Staszic Chamber is the tallest one open to visitors. It hosted the world's first underground bungee jump in 1998, and a Guinness World Record for an underground hot-air balloon flight in 2000.
5️⃣ Miners once believed in spirits guarding the salt deposits – the goblin-like figure of Skarbnik still appears in underground legends today and is a stop on the tour.
6️⃣ The mine's corridors stretch about 245 km across 9 levels (the deepest reaching 327 m). Visitors are allowed to see only about 2% of it.
7️⃣ The underground temperature stays constant year-round at about 16–18°C, whatever the weather above.
8️⃣ Horses worked underground until the 21st century! The last mine horse, a mare named Baśka, was finally brought to the surface in 2002 and lived almost 13 more years.
9️⃣ The underground salt lakes have a distinctive greenish tint, linked to the water's exceptionally high salinity.
🔟 The first documented visitors came as early as the 15th century — reportedly including Copernicus in 1493. Organized tourism (with visitor logbooks) only began in the late 18th century, drawing guests like Goethe (1790), Chopin, Paderewski, and Piłsudski. Since 1945, the mine has welcomed over 45 million visitors.
