The Christmas Markets are here ! Look and listen a bit more about one of them - the oldest one - in Dresden !

The 591st Striezelmarkt opened on November 26th in Dresden’s Altmarkt, the site of the first pre-Christmas market in 1434. Originally, townspeople bought meat there for their Christmas Eve feast after fasting. Over time, sweets appeared, including the early form of Dresden’s famous Christstollen—a yeast cake with dried fruit and powdered sugar, shaped to resemble the swaddled Baby Jesus.
At this year’s opening, four confectioners presented a 2.025-meter-long Christstollen. Mayor Dirk Hilbert made the first cut, approved the taste, and then switched on the lights of the 22-meter Christmas tree decorated with 260,000 lights.

Another highlight is the giant wooden Step Pyramid, almost 15 meters tall, with rotating tiers featuring hunters, angels, the Three Kings, Santa Claus, and other traditional figures. The design stems from miners’ decorated ore-treadmills and candle pyramids used in churches; once cheap paraffin was available in the 1830s, the rotating mechanism became common.

Visitors can also explore an exhibition hall of Ore Mountains folk art, watching master woodcarvers and wood turners at work. Children can make Pflaumentoffel—little chimney-sweep figures made of dried plums, inspired by poor children who once swept chimneys in Dresden and later sold the figures as lucky charms.
