One of the most famous pirates associated with Cabo Rojo is Roberto Cofresí, also known as "El Pirata Cofresí." Cofresí was born in Cabo Rojo in 1791 and became a pirate at a young age. He became known for his bravery and his generosity to the poor. Cofresí was captured and executed in 1825, but his legend lives on in Cabo Rojo. One of the most popular stories about Cofresí is that of the treasure he hid in Cabo Rojo. According to legend, Cofresí buried his treasure in a cave. Many treasure hunters have tried to find the Cofresí treasure, but to this day, it remains unfound.
