The Legend of Villa Pitirre: A story of patriotic courage and belonging in Puerto Rico
High in the misty mountains of Canóvanas, where the rainforest hums and rivers sparkle like silver ribbons, there is a place called Villa Pitirre — a peaceful nest cradled by nature’s arms.
Long ago, before the villa had a name, the sky above the forest told a story.
The Guaraguao, a grand and powerful eagle, ruled the heavens. His wings spread wide across Puerto Rico, his shadow strong and commanding. He was beauty, strength, and might — but also a reminder of life’s great challenges.
Down below lived the Pitirre, a small gray kingbird with a bright spirit and a brave heart. His song was pure, his flight quick as the wind. He guarded his little nest — his home — with love and fierce pride.
One day, the Guaraguao glided low over the forest, his shadow falling over the Pitirre’s tree.
But the Pitirre did not hide. He rose into the sunlight and called out:
> “This is my home, my sky, my island.
You are mighty, but I am free —
and I will protect what I love.”
With courage far greater than his size, the Pitirre darted through the air, standing up to the giant.
The Guaraguao, wise and noble, paused — and with a graceful turn, lifted his wings and soared away.
From that moment, the rainforest remembered.
The Pitirre became a symbol of courage, of love for Cubuy, and of Puerto Rico itself — small in size, but vast in heart.
And our nest, where his song once echoed, became Villa Pitirre —
a home that celebrates the spirit of our island: brave, magical, free, and filled with love.
