Yeah Baby let’s go Tropical

On a November night in 1974, scientists at the Arecibo Observatory in the hills of Puerto Rico pointed the largest radio telescope on Earth toward a cluster of stars 25,000 light years away and sent a message. It carried the basics of who we are, our numbers, our DNA, our solar system, encoded in radio pulses, a kind of cosmic postcard launched from Puerto Rican soil.

The broadcast lasted less than three minutes, but it remains the most powerful deliberate transmission humanity has ever aimed at the stars, and it is still traveling, decades later, through the dark. For years afterward, the massive dish nestled into the island's karst hills stood as a point of quiet pride, a place where Puerto Rico did not just study the universe but spoke to it.

There is something moving about a small island reaching further into space than almost anywhere else on the planet. If you could send one message from Earth out into the universe, what would you want it to say?

Knowledge it’s Power

Before the Borinqueneers became legends on the battlefields of Korea, they were young men drilling on a dusty field near San Juan, learning to carry the name of an island into a world war. 🎖️🇵🇷 It started at Camp Las Casas.

In 1917, the same year the Jones Act granted United States citizenship to Puerto Ricans and made them eligible for the military draft, Camp Las Casas in Santurce became the main training ground for Puerto Rican soldiers preparing for the First World War. Thousands of recruits passed through its gates, training for a conflict an ocean away on behalf of a nation that had granted them citizenship and obligation in the same breath. It was here that the foundations of Puerto Rico's modern military legacy were laid.

Many of the men trained at Camp Las Casas served in the units that would eventually become the 65th Infantry Regiment, the Borinqueneers, whose valor in later wars would finally earn the Congressional Gold Medal decades after the fact. The camp itself is gone now, replaced by a public housing community that still carries the name, but the history made on that ground helped shape generations of Puerto Rican service and sacrifice. 🕊️

These were ordinary young men from the towns and mountains of the island, stepping into history without knowing where it would lead. Does your family have roots in the island's long military legacy, and how far back does it reach?
