1. It Has No Native Mosquitos
Thanks to the forest’s elevation, cooler temperatures, natural predators, and the constant flow of running water that prevents stagnation, you will not be bothered by mosquitos.

2. It’s Extremely Water-Rich
El Yunque receives staggering amounts of rainfall—sometimes over 200 inches a year in the higher peaks. This deluge results in the forest supplying nearly 20% of Puerto Rico’s fresh drinking water.

3. It’s a Sacred Indigenous Site
The name “El Yunque” is thought to come from the Taíno word Yuke, meaning “white earth,” or Yúcahu, the god of fertility. Indigenous people viewed the mountain as a sacred home of the gods, similar to Mount Olympus.

4. It Was Once Used as a WWII Radar Site
During World War II, the mist-covered peaks served as a strategic Caribbean radar station used by the U.S. military to detect early warnings of German submarines and aircraft.

5. It Has No Native Mammals (Except Bats)
Because the island was formed by volcanic activity rather than being connected to a mainland, the only land mammals native to the entire island are bats. You might see rats or mongoose, but both were introduced by humans centuries later.

Step into a completely different world. Imagine turning off the main road, trekking through lush green trails, and suddenly finding yourself wading through hidden rivers flanked by towering, ancient cave walls. 🌌🥾

This isn’t your average sight-seeing trip. It’s an immersive, first-person dive into the raw, untouched heart of the island. If you’re ready to trade the crowded resort paths for an actual expedition, the cave tunnels of Arenales are waiting.
