Vejigante 🎨🖌️
Since 2006, Juan Pablo has been carving vejigantes, one of the most iconic cultural symbols of his people, following in the footsteps of master artisans like Castor Ayala, Raúl Ayala, Samuel Lind, Juan Luis Sánchez, and Carlos Ayala Calcaño.
Through his work with vejigantes, murals, handcrafted masks, puppet theater, music, and dance, Juan Pablo blends art with everyday life, reaffirming that art is more than decoration—it’s a reflection of struggle, resilience, and identity.
As a member of Papel Machete-Agitarte, he took the colorful character of the vejigante to the streets as a symbol of resistance, using his craft to celebrate and protect Puerto Rico’s traditions.
Growing up along the Río Grande de Loíza, Juan was deeply inspired by nature’s beauty and Loíza’s rich cultural heritage—Puerto Rico’s capital of tradition. His mission is clear: to honor and preserve Taino and Afro-Caribbean heritage while inspiring future generations.
With every stroke of paint and every carved mask, Juan Pablo leaves his mark, ensuring that his culture and roots continue to thrive! 🌿✨
