I've been reading a lot about the history of education in Puerto Rico lately, and it made me realize how much it has shaped my own life.
I attended the University of Puerto Rico at Ponce, and my sister spent her career teaching in Puerto Rico's elementary schools. She absolutely loved her students and believed every child deserved the chance to succeed.
I also learned that Puerto Rico has gone from approximately 1,500 public schools to about 862 today. Those numbers reflect decades of change, but they also remind me of something that hasn't changed—the dedication of Puerto Rican educators.
Looking back, I'm grateful for the teachers who believed in me and for a family that always valued education.
Puerto Rico's greatest resource has never been its beaches or mountains.
It's its people.
